Looking for violin teacher in NYC

October 30, 2006 at 01:56 AM · Hey, can anyone help me find a really really good violin teacher in NYC that will really push you and bring out the best musician in you? I've had several these past few years and they have all been great but either they are too expensive or not for me. I've studied with YiBin Li and Lewis Kaplan who I thought were both great.

On another note I am also looking for a violin teacher (can be the same person or different) who can help with improvisation and repetoire other than classical? Can anyone help? Thanks!

October 30, 2006 at 03:46 AM · For studying improv and non-classical styles in NYC you should get in touch with Julie Lyonn Lieberman

(212) 724-3256

e-mail: Julie HMus@aol.com

Julie is the best around. She has worked in a whole gamut of non-classical style and has devoted her life to teaching those styles, particularly to classically trained string players. You may be familiar with some of her books, "Improvising Violin, The Contemporary Violinist, etc.

His technique is unconventional, but he can teach you tunes, the Cajun "approach" to improv, etc. He's at hample@rcn.com If you don't mind going out to Rye, there's Michelle Kaminsky. Assorted fiddle styles, plays in a good band. mkfiddle@earthlink.comSue

October 31, 2006 at 06:15 AM · For improv, I second the nomination about Julie. For mainstream teaching...ahem...modesty forbids me from recommending myself! And besides, I see that you live in Flushing, and I live rather far from you, at the Southern tip of Brooklyn, in Coney Island.

Speaking of Flushing, have you checked out the current faculty at Queens College? Maybe some of them could work out private lessons. In the upper West Side area, I would highly recommend one of my former teachers, Regis Iandiorio - an excellent player, teacher, and a gentleman. If interested, e-mail me, and I'll give you his number.

Good luck!
