After 28 years in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, ROY SONNE took early retirement in order to devote himself to an ever-increasing number of musical projects and interests.

CURRENT PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES:

BUILDING UP THE LEVEL OF STRING PLAYING IN BOLIVIA: Initiating a new annual activity in 2009, Roy spent six weeks in La Paz, Bolivia, working with string players from the Bolivian National Symphony, the National Conservatory of Music, and the Orquesta Sinfonica Municipal de El Alto. He led a two week seminar to study basic string playing techniques and apply them into a string orchestra setting. He gave private instruction for students and teachers as well as ensemble coaching. He also played a solo recital and performed with the National Symphony Orchestra. Future plans include an enlarged seminar and string festival, and similar activities in other Bolivian cities including Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. Roy will also be working in the US to recruit musicians and music teachers for the National Symphony and the National Conservatory.

VIOLIN TEACHING: A constant in his life, along with group violin classes and student recitals. He is on the faculty of the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center, Carnegie Mellon University Preparatory Department and the Music Institute For the Development of Personal Style. He also maintains a large private teaching studio in his home in Mt. Lebanon, PA.

VIOLIN EXCURSIONS: New dimensions in instructional videos for violin students. The central focus is “Building Musical Artistry” at every level of development, from beginner to professional -- using the resources of technology including digital media, and interactive communication online.

HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA CLINICS: For 15 years Roy was a Pittsburgh Symphony Ambassador, making frequent visits to many high schools in the Pittsburgh area., Although he is no longer affiliated with the Pittsburgh Symphony, he continues to do workshops and coaching sessions at several Pittsburgh area High Schools.

JAZZ VIOLIN EXCURSION: Roy started playing jazz violin at age 60, after a 40 year career as a symphony musician. Through playing jazz, Roy's musical universe became so much richer that he became determined to share this experience with other classically trained string players. Working with some exciting and phenomenally talented folks, he founded the Pittsburgh Jazz and Fiddling Camp at Duquesne University, now preparing for its fifth season and recently renamed Strings Without Boundaries.
