Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers Nominated for Two 2024 Latin Grammy Awards for 'Fandango'

September 20, 2024, 3:44 PM · This week violinist Anne Akiko Meyers was nominated for two 2024 Latin Grammy Awards, both for Fandango, the world-premiere recording of Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s mariachi-inspired concerto for violin and orchestra, commissioned and recorded live by Meyers in October 2022 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

The nominations are in the categories of "Best Classical Album" and "Best Classical Contemporary Composition." (Find the complete list of 2024 Latin Grammy Award nominations in all categories here.)

"In 2018, after hearing (Marquez's) 'Danzon No. 2' - music that made my heart and soul dance - my dream for a mariachi-inspired violin concerto was reignited," Meyers said. "Soon after, I approached the great Arturo Márquez. He shared with me that his late father was a mariachi violinist, and he was waiting to write this music that stirred in his heart for decades. 'Fandango' was soon born when I gave the world premiere at the Hollywood Bowl in 2021, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel conducting - and dancing!"

The recording came a year later, and by now Meyers has performed the work with more than 25 orchestras across the United States and Mexico. Here is a trailer for the album, with comments by Meyers and excerpts from the concerto:

September 23, 2024 at 06:03 PM · Naive question: is the sheet music available?

Nerdy comment: The flashy solo violin style from Mexico is called either Huasteco or Huapango, with a distinctive dance style. The vocal parts feature falsetto breaks. Mariachis absorbed some of those tunes after about 1960.

September 25, 2024 at 05:25 PM · Hi Joel, I have the answer for you!

The music is available through Peer Music. You can read the score here and access it for rental via Maestro Marquez's catalogue here.

I asked also about getting just the violin part so one can learn that, I'll let you know what I find out!
