May 19, 2024 at 11:48 AM · People should really have a look at the Mozart concerto played by Dmitry Smirnov. Some people were outraged how he tries to fool the conductor, but other people were enchanted by his approach to violin playing (with gut strings and transitional bow). He was all the talk during the first two weeks of the competition here in Brussels. Unfortunately he did not make it to the finals.

On the following website, click top right the magnifying glass icon to search, and search Dmitry Smirnov:

May 19, 2024 at 01:37 PM · How did he try to fool the conductor?

May 19, 2024 at 02:40 PM · I am kind of glad that Dimitry Smirnov did't advance.

He was often out of sync with the orchestra when he played along in the tuttis, and often rushing there. His spiccato was really sloppy and I really can't stand the unvaried and unclear vibrato assisted trills that he did.

A lot of his playing is of course of the highest playing (excluding the Mozart 4), but the Pag caprice 4 was very eccentric and I don't know what I should say about his Bartok Sonata.

I am sure that he will have a fine carrer, even if he didn't go through in this competition.

Delighted to be able to see the Twelve Finalists due severe Computer Outages due AT&T's awful Glitch installing AT&T Internet Air system, All US Friends, Do Not Do This!! I am so fortunate to be loaned a device to use until Mid Week when a horrible loss of Internet is supposed to be remedied!?

For now I've just a thought or a few re The Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Violin Competition 2024 and my lucky association with this IMO one of The Only FIVE MAJOR INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN CONCOURS IN THE WORLD {w/Tchaikovsky/Moscow; SIBELIUS/Helsinki, FI; ELMAR OLIVIERA INT'L VIOLIN COMPETITION, US BASED; WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMP/Poznan in Poland; & QUEEN ELISABETH INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION FOUNDED BY LATE QUEEN ELISABETH OF BELGIUM, AN AVID AMATEUR VIOLINIST PUPIL OF GOAT EUGEN YSAYE W/WHOM MY SECOND GOAT VIOLINIST MENTOR, NATHAN MILSTEIN, PLAYED SQ'S WITH IN YSAYE'S SUMMER VILLA IN ZOOT , BELGIUM, AFTER SHY PLAYING FOR YSAYE IN HIS VILLA DRIVEWAY, AND MOST IMPROMPTU, TOSSING OFF FIVE PAGANINI CAPRICES IN HOT SUN AFTER WALKING FROM BRUSSELS TO ZOOT TO MEET THE GREAT YSAYE, STUNNING THE MASTER WHO INVITED **YOUNG MILSTEIN IN FOR FOOD SO IMPRESSED THEN SHOVED A VIOLA INTO MILSTEIN'S HANDS AS VIOLIST FOR THEIR CHAMBER MUS EVENING VIOLIST WAS SICK, LATER BEING INTRODUCED TO LATE ARRIVAL SECOND VIOLINIST, QUEEN ELISABETH OF BELGIUM, PUPIL OF YSAYE, NERVOUS ASKING MENTOR, YSAYE, TUNE HER MAJESTY'S VIOLIN STRINGS THEN PLAYING SQ'S TOGETHER W/YSAYE, 1ST VIOLIN; HM THE QUEEN ELISABETH OF BELGIUM, 2ND VIOLIN; NATHAN MILSTEIN, VIOLA! & FINE BRUSSELS OPERA PRINCIPLE CELLIST FOR A RARE EVENNG MILSTEIN WOULD MANY DECADES LATER TELL ME, HIS FIRST PRIVATE HEIFETZ PUPIL , ALL ABOUT, and as Oft said: "THE REST IS HISTORY!!" I KNOW A BIT OF THE HISTORY OF THE FOUNDRESS OF THE QUEEN ELISABETH OF BELGIUM INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN CONCOURS FROM MY MENTOR/FRIEND, MILSTEIN OF 24 YEARS , AND YES, I DID ASK NM HOW HM QUEEN ELISABETH OF BELGIUM PLAYED VIOLIN!! Answer: In my Book In Process!!

My Hopes are for US Sweep of The Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Violin Concours due Grand Teaching of Colleague-Friend, Great Violinist, Miriam Fried, with whom I chatted for 'the Strad' several hours here in Ravinia about her gloried International Violin Performing|Recording Career and saying her Career would never have been without Winning The Gold Medal @The Queen Elisabeth of Belgium International Violin Competition in, I believe, 1968?? All Said, I have great confidence in Miriam Fried's rare integrity & refined discernment to Award those Most Deserving. I have witnessed horrors in 2016 of the Wieniawski International Violin Competition when a known Jury Member went on a Wild and Public Rage Protest to International News Media about a truly Great young {age 20} Violinist, Veriko Tchumbridgz, not being equal to His Own Pupil and throwing horrid accusations at and against young Veriko T., which caused Jury Member Head, Maxim Vengerov his reputation as Jury Head with Viral Global Embarrassment. Veriko 'T's' exceptional Public Final Round Performance of Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto in a min Op. 99, was so mature and glorious her Wieniawski Int'l Violin Competition overall performances earned her The Gold Medal and to try making Right All The Wrong, Vengerov invited Gold Medalist, Veriko 'T' with Bonsori Kim and 1 other to perform Vivaldi's Four Violin Concerto w/himself to bring Peace to All ~

It is well known that Major International String and Piano Competitions cause immense stress and often bring undue harm to Honourable Competitors knowing little of inner and sometimes political goings on with some Members of the Jury voting or in the past voting for their own pupil/s competing which was often the case which caused mayhem at the First Sibelius International Violin Competition, in Helsinki, FI, with my fellow US Competitor of New York City, NY, late Violinist, Superb Champion of Contemporary Music, Paul Zukovsky, to hold an International News Media Conference in Helsinki, and going viral prior to Internet access in 1965!! Paul asked I also attend & co-complain, but living in London, UK, & only Heifetz Pupil, I deferred going to my Hosts to then practise even more ...

A Word: I was later honoured with the Sibelius Int'l Violin Competition Special Award for Best Outstanding Unaccompanied Bach in Violin w/an Invite from ailing Madam Sibelius, widow of Jean Sibelius, to perform the Slow Mvt of her husband, Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto, "Adagio di molto" for The Finnish Gov't Official Inaugural Concert/Ceremony and given in the Birth-House of Sibelius, then proclaimed by Finnish Minister of Culture, 'The Sibelius National Memorial Museum' before All Five Sibelius Daughters| other Sibelius Family & Televised by 8 International TV Co.'s via Eurovision on the Centenery of Master Composer, Jean Sibelius' Birth!!

In revisiting Real Happenings, I have done so to highlight my own confidence in Jury Member/former Gold Medalist, *Miriam Fried's genuine Integrity which may well bring finest and most deserving Medalists to the fore!! Let us all hope for the finest and most deserving both technically-musically and Spiritually to Prevail in June of 2024?!!
