The conventional wisdom used to be that it's not really possible to learn to play the violin, unless you have a real, live teacher.
I'd say that most people still need a teacher, but these it is possible to learn quite a lot about violin technique from online tutorials.
Sure, this is not the same as having an in-person teacher. As much as you can learn from tutorials, you still will probably reach a point where it is helpful to have someone listen to and evaluate your playing in person. But these days, the quality of online tutorials really has improved greatly, and it is possible to learn quite a lot from YouTube tutorials.
Do you ever turn to the Internet for help with your violin technique? Do you use online tutorials? Do you take lessons online, rather than in person? Please participate in our vote, and then share your experience with online tutorials in the comments.
Thank you to Susanna Klein for this week's vote idea! If you have an idea for the weekend vote, please email Laurie Niles!

I live way out in the country and although I have had two teachers in the past (one passed away, one retired) I am always looking online for tutorials, suggestions and tips. It is a valuable tool that people need to utilize.
If you want to, I post almost daily something which I hope would be helpful to youtube.com/chinkimviolinist
I find online tutorials quite helpful when I'm looking for new inspiration. It's like a little shot in the arm that gets me motivated and ready to practice.
I had six teachers from the time I was a kid till I finished school. Nowadays I sometimes wish I could have, say, 6 months of brush-up sessions with a teacher - and there are a good number of teachers in my area. Regrettably, the other demands on my schedule these days preclude this. So I am indeed thankful for online tutorials.
I majored in music, so my musician’s ear and hands don’t need lessons to the extent they did in my beginner days. I consider these online tutorials valuable brush-up lessons - the next-best thing to having an on-site teacher. A fair number of these online training sessions are uploads from v.com members. They really hold my attention and interest - always something more to learn, always new perspectives from other players.
