The 2024 Sphinx Competition Announces Semi-Finalists
Semi-finalists have been announced in the 27th Annual Sphinx Competition, which will take place January 24-27 in Detroit, Michigan. They include:
Junior Division Semi-Finalists (ages 17 and under):

- Ana Isabella España, violin
- Anthony Dorsey, violin
- Catalina Wooldridge, cello
- Gabriela Salvador Riera, violin
- Jan Vargas Nedvetsky, cello
- Noah Carr, violin
- Quincy Alexander Eby, viola
- Rebecca Beato, violin
- Sonya Moomaw, cello
Senior Division Semi-Finalists (ages 18 to 30):

- Aaron Olguin, bass
- Andres Sanchez, cello
- Bethlehem Kelley, violin
- Christian Luevano, bass
- Edward Luengo, cello
- Hannah White, violin
- Julimar Victoria Gonzalez Leon, violin
- Nathan Amaral, violin
- Nazeeh Shahid, viola
- Victor Daniel Diaz Sanchez, viola
- Virgil Moore, violin
The Sphinx Competition is a national competition offering young Black and Latinx classical string players a chance to compete under the guidance of an internationally renowned panel of judges and to perform with and receive mentorship from established professional musicians. This year's jury will include Joseph Conyers, Randall Goosby, Alasdair Tait, George Taylor, Elena Urioste, Seth Parker Woods and John Zion.
Finalists in both divisions have the opportunity to perform with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, the unique all Black and Latinx orchestra comprised of top professionals from around the country, and compete for a total of nearly $100,000 in prizes, including the top Robert Frederick Smith Prize.
