Singing lessons

Edited: January 11, 2026, 6:48 AM · I'm wondering how prevalent it is these days to tutor budding violinists in the art and skills of singing? At the same age as I started learning the violin I was discovered to be able to pitch a note, press-ganged into the school choir and received singing instruction more or less in parallel with the violin. After neglecting it for a decade, in my 30's I joined a tiny a capella renaissance choir and discovered I could still carry a solo part. I'm sure the experience has been a major factor in my musical development, that I'd recommend to anyone.

January 11, 2026, 7:00 AM · I've contemplated a few lessons because I'm a bass-baritone who could cope if press-ganged - as a bass - but I can only hit the lowest bass notes pianissimo. Most likely is that practice would be better than lessons.
January 11, 2026, 8:34 AM · I wonder how many pianists get singing lessons thinking they're going to be the next Harry Connick or Diana Krall.
January 11, 2026, 10:45 AM · I’d like to take some singing lessons. Some of favorite musicians are singers and keyboardists.
January 11, 2026, 11:01 AM · Being able to sing well is a blessing. Yes, voice training can make you a much better musician. It's also a great back pocket skill for gigs.. and campfires.

January 11, 2026, 2:04 PM · My dd is an amazing vocalist. She gets frustrated bc her voice far exceeds her violin playing and does so with very little effort. She does take voice lessons. In terms of music theory and aural trading, absolutely sight singing definitely helps.
January 11, 2026, 2:14 PM · I never needed voice training for ABRSM aural for grade 8 piano or oboe.
January 11, 2026, 3:08 PM · Fortunately, a member of my band is a retired teacher of voice, among other instruments. She taught me scale warmups, melody, and harmony singing. I’m decent at it.
Being able to sing to learn a violin piece doesn’t hurt at all.
To me, having a voice coach is indispensable. I tried singing with a church choir, and I was just totally lost. It’s a whole different world.
