Prokofiev Concerto #2

Edited: October 26, 2025, 11:40 AM · Does anyone have an edited pdf of the concerto that I might consult? I am trying to do an edited version but it is a chromatic nightmare as far as fingerings go. The Russian edition (on Imslp) seems to have a lot of “kitchen table” fingerings in the more chromatic passagework. bruce_berg@baylor.edu Thanks, Bruce

Edited: October 27, 2025, 8:23 AM · Hello Bruce: I'm posting a link to something I wrote about the Prokofiev 2nd concerto a few years ago. It doesn't answer your question but it may be of interest. To my surprise, it drew no response at the time.

October 26, 2025, 1:26 PM · It appears that the International edition is no longer available. Sniff...
October 26, 2025, 1:38 PM · I can't comment on the actual fingerings, but Yampolsky's edition seems to have a lot of them! And I am guessing that those were adopted by a good chunk of the USSR school. It would interesting to compare with Heifetz and Oistrakh's recordings.
October 27, 2025, 1:49 AM · Bruce, I have an International edition dating back to my first year of grad school. Happy to scan and email to you if you’re still interested.
October 27, 2025, 4:35 AM · Mary Ellen, That would be greatly appreciated! Bruce bruce_berg@baylor.edu
October 27, 2025, 6:30 AM · my feel for the English language is not good enough to understand when a fingering would be classified as "kitchen table"?
October 27, 2025, 6:50 AM · Not all English people know what it is supposed to mean.
October 27, 2025, 10:07 AM · Theoretical fingerings, as those figured out while sitting at the kitchen table.
October 27, 2025, 12:14 PM · Bruce, Just fyi, my local library has a Kalmus edition of the Prokofiev 2nd, but there are no fingerings provided in the part.
Edited: October 27, 2025, 12:16 PM · We tend to say "armchair" rather than "kitchen table", for theoretical behaviour, but in this context I'm not so sure.
October 27, 2025, 3:05 PM · It comes from the fact that Galamian sat at the kitchen table with no violin when he was doing his editions.
October 27, 2025, 3:52 PM · It is very relatable. I often prepare parts on the kitchen table, and indeed, many of my kitchen table fingerings turn out to be suboptimal upon actually practicing the material!
October 27, 2025, 4:51 PM · Bruce - done. It’s a very large file so I had to send it by mail drop. Please let me know if there’s any problem downloading it.
