Audition

October 20, 2025, 9:18 PM · I'm auditioning for a youth orchestra and they want two contrasting orchestra excerpts and a solo/concerto. I have already decided on my two excerpts which are mendelssohn a midsummer night's dream overture measure 6-81 and mahler 9 movement 1 measure 223 to reh 13, but I've still need a solo/concerto. Anyone have any suggestions to what I should play

Did you choose your excerpts out of the blue? Or from an approved list? Or from a list of knowing what others have played to earn placement in the same orchestra?
October 20, 2025, 10:20 PM · What solos/concertos have you already done, and how long do you have to prepare? That will determine whether what you choose should be something you've done before or if it can be something new.
October 21, 2025, 12:15 AM · sorry my teacher helped me choose my excerpts but she says it's up to me as to what I should play for the solo/concerto. I forgot to include the ones I played before, the concertos I've played are mozart 3, lalo (not 5th movement), bruch, mendelssohn, and the solo pieces I played are praeludium and allegro by kreisler, introduction and rondo capriccioso, scherzo tarantelle by wienawksi. I want to complete the audition in around a month
October 21, 2025, 12:59 AM · If you're trying to complete the audition in a month definitely do something you've done before. It doesn't have to be the most recent piece you've done, but it's much easier to relearn something you've already played in a month than to learn a completely new work. Not saying it's impossible, but depending on your playing level it could be a daunting task. How would you/your teacher say each of these piece went when you played them in the past? I'd probably pick the one you played the strongest. If there is more than one contender then pick the one you like the most.

I think my scherzo tarantelle is okay and I've played praeludium and allegro and introduction and rondo capriccioso before at like a volunteer gig thing, i'll look through each of the pieces and decide which one I like. Thanks!
