When I set-up a violin that is new to me, I start with Dominants because they give me a baseline on what strings to try next.
I don't use the E-strings that come in any of the sets as I prefer Goldbrokat E strings (0.26 and 0.27) more than any other that I have tried.
They seem to offer better clarity for a warm violin, I also beef up the G & D with a heavy gauge, Jarger E string.
On my other two violins I'm trying tonicas since they're very affordable but previously they were using Rondos and Rondo Golds. So far not happy with them on one violin so I'll probably go back to dominants since those worked well and they're cheaper than the rondo gold. I don't play these violins as much so if can get away with cheaper strings I will.
