How trustworthy is Anna Magdalena Bach?

Edited: September 4, 2025, 10:00 AM · I'd never thought to doubt Anna Magdalena much when it comes to the S&P, except for a few measures where Baerenreiter's phrasing is tricky without one or two personal bowing decisions.

But yesterday I looked at the prelude to BWV1007 and was surprised at how sketchy her work seems. Baerenreiter's choice was just one of many possibilities, I suspect.

This makes me wonder how good her S&P really are.

Edited: September 4, 2025, 10:54 AM · For BWV 1001–BWV 1006, since Bach’s own manuscripts exist, I have rarely consulted Anna’s manuscript up to now. When I checked it briefly just a moment ago, it seemed that there are quite a few discrepancies in the slur markings between the two.
For BWV 1007–BWV 1012, since Bach’s manuscript has been lost, direct comparison is not possible, but again there appear to be numerous slur markings that strike me as unnatural in her manuscript.
Here is my hypothesis: in Anna’s manuscript of BWV 1007–BWV 1012, the passages that might be regarded as copying errors tend to be marked with dot-like signs. I suspect there is a possibility that Bach himself may have reviewed this manuscript.
In any case, her manuscript today is an invaluable treasure, and I am always grateful for Anna’s efforts at the time.

September 4, 2025, 12:02 PM · Damn, I forgot the S&P were JS and not AM.
September 4, 2025, 6:57 PM · The urtext for the cello suites, where there is no JSB manuscript is based on four sources of which AM's is only one. I have not looked into this in any depth, but I have read that about the only thing the four sources agree on is the notes.
For the S&Ps we are lucky to have JSB's manuscript.
September 4, 2025, 7:03 PM · Given the number of kids she had, how could she have the energy to be untrustworthy?
September 4, 2025, 7:25 PM · After examining Anna's manuscripts for BWV 1007–BWV 1012, I've come to suspect there's a trend regarding the slurs. It seems there are many cases where the slurs are shorter than those in the original manuscript. On the other hand, I think that cases with an incorrect slur start are relatively few.
I have placed my own edited version of Anna's manuscript on my GitHub repository. I also uploaded a version to IMSLP, but it is not the most recent one.
