Kreutzer studies guide

January 25, 2022, 6:49 AM · Thought I’d share as I’m sure some will benefit. I am practicing Kreutzer etude 2 and wasn’t sure on the bowings. I haven’t got a teacher just at the moment so after some searching I found ‘How to study Kreutzer’ by Benjamin Cutter. It’s written in ‘old’ English but still easy to understand. Very helpful with both descriptive bow and hand techniques. It also is clear about the importance of starting slowly reference creating nerve impulses etc. Definitely helps make the most of these etudes!

The author, Cutter, mentions the earlier study guide on Kreutzer by Massart (which is less wordy than Cutter, and consists mainly of variations or hints on studying the etudes, directly in music notation). The original editions are public domain and have been made available in digitized form by public libraries:

Massart
