Performing Arts High Schools

July 24, 2006 at 10:15 PM · I am considering attending a performing arts high school sometime in the next few years, but I'm not really sure what's out there to consider. Are there any good long lists of some of the performing arts high schools out there? And by this I do not mean weekend prep schools like Julliard prep or NEC prep, but residential schools.

Thanks,

Ellen

There's a very good performing-and-visual arts boarding school in Birmingham, Alabama called the Alabama School of Fine Arts. I think the string teacher is named Ruth Salzberg, so you could try looking her up. It's a very good school. Some of the violinists at my college went there.

I think it's like a prep school so it is pretty expensive (30k a year probably).

July 25, 2006 at 04:26 AM · NYC, what used to be Performing Arts High School is now the LaGuardia High School of the performing Arts.

July 25, 2006 at 01:38 PM · North Carolina School of the Arts

Walnut Hill

Interlochen Arts Academy

those are three that pop up off the top of my head. they're all boarding arts schools. I'm sure there are some on the West coast too.

July 25, 2006 at 04:12 PM · I went to NC School of the Arts for my senior year of high school in 1994. I suppose it may have changed a lot by now, but it was pretty intense then. Going from a "regular" high school where I was the only violinist to NCSA was a huge change for me. I ended up deciding not to go into performance for college and I went to a university instead of a conservatory after that year.

If you're up to the pressure and the competition and all the wierdos, go for it. It is a great place to get ahead if you can stand it. It will also let you test out a conservatory before you apply to college.

Good luck :-)

July 25, 2006 at 09:15 PM · Idyllwild Arts Academy. its located in the mountains of southern california, near palm springs.

Hilary Hahn went up there and played a few concerts with the orchestra a couple of years ago.

September 2, 2006 at 03:54 AM · idyllwild arts academy is a pretty well- rounded arts and education high school. IT's like the west coast's walnut hill, but better.

September 2, 2006 at 04:26 AM · Actually, I think you'd do better to go to some place like Julliard prep, paired with a good local high school than an "arts school". Just my opinion...
