I am considering attending a performing arts high school sometime in the next few years, but I'm not really sure what's out there to consider. Are there any good long lists of some of the performing arts high schools out there? And by this I do not mean weekend prep schools like Julliard prep or NEC prep, but residential schools.
Thanks,
Ellen
Walnut Hill. NEC teachers teach some of the pupils there.
I think it's like a prep school so it is pretty expensive (30k a year probably).
NYC, what used to be Performing Arts High School is now the LaGuardia High School of the performing Arts.
North Carolina School of the Arts
Walnut Hill
Interlochen Arts Academy
those are three that pop up off the top of my head. they're all boarding arts schools. I'm sure there are some on the West coast too.
I went to NC School of the Arts for my senior year of high school in 1994. I suppose it may have changed a lot by now, but it was pretty intense then. Going from a "regular" high school where I was the only violinist to NCSA was a huge change for me. I ended up deciding not to go into performance for college and I went to a university instead of a conservatory after that year.
If you're up to the pressure and the competition and all the wierdos, go for it. It is a great place to get ahead if you can stand it. It will also let you test out a conservatory before you apply to college.
Good luck :-)
Cori - I seem to remember the town you live in being mentioned in passing in a Stephen King book I was reading the other days. Weird coincidence...
Idyllwild Arts Academy. its located in the mountains of southern california, near palm springs.
Hilary Hahn went up there and played a few concerts with the orchestra a couple of years ago.
idyllwild arts academy is a pretty well- rounded arts and education high school. IT's like the west coast's walnut hill, but better.
Actually, I think you'd do better to go to some place like Julliard prep, paired with a good local high school than an "arts school". Just my opinion...

what's the point if you can get the same caliber teachers at your normal school?

There's a very good performing-and-visual arts boarding school in Birmingham, Alabama called the Alabama School of Fine Arts. I think the string teacher is named Ruth Salzberg, so you could try looking her up. It's a very good school. Some of the violinists at my college went there.
