Taneyev -- Suite de Concert

January 13, 2006 at 08:43 AM · A long time ago I played in an orchestra that performed S.N. Taneyev's cantata "John of Damascus". (We played from music with the texts in Cyrillic script, so we called him Taheeb, for fun.)

I loved that music.

There is a Suite de Concert for violin by the same composer, which I haven't heard or seen the score of, since.

Does anyone of you know that piece? How would you describe the music? Is it

-- difficult?

-- beautiful?

-- worthwile?

Thanks for the info!

a rare Igor 0istrakh's with Arnold Katz. IMO it is

a big v.c.very violinistic, well written, with

beautiful melodies and one of many 19th.century

works unjustified forgotten.One of the best russian

romantic violin works.

January 13, 2006 at 01:37 PM · gorgeous piece!

January 14, 2006 at 07:10 AM · Thank you both for your responses.

A CD of the concerto is sold on amazon.co.uk. It's in a box of violin concertos with David Oistrakh playing the solo violin. So in a few days I'm going to hear the music. I will keep you posted.

And it's S.I, not S.N. Taneyev -- sorry for that mistake.

(Other spellings from the Library of Congress database Taneev,Taneiev,Tanejew)

Suite de Concert, [Concert Suite] Op. 28

Violin Solo with Piano

Perhaps one of the members from Russia will be able to tell us if this sheet music is still available. The MK agent in the U.S. Schirmer/Music Sales–Hal Leonard, does not list this edition.

The orchestra parts for Violin solo and orchestra would be on rental from the agent for MK in your country.

Another edition

Sergei I. Taneyev ;

Concert suite, for violin and orchestra Op.28/

transcribed for violin and piano;

[violin part edited by David Oistrakh].

Prelude -- Gavotte -- Fairy tale -- Theme and variations -- Tarantella.

1 score (62 p.) + 1 part (26 p.) ; 31 cm.

[This publisher is no longer listed in Bethesda MD but there is a BR Music company in Akron OH.

With the change in the U.S. copyright law this would now be illegal to sell.]

January 15, 2006 at 07:11 PM · Thanks -- being from the Netherlands, I'll try Broekmans en van Poppel in Amsterdam for the sheet music.

January 17, 2006 at 09:32 AM · Bart the municipal (gemeentelijke) library here in The Hague has it. So I suppose the Amsterdam library, in case you live there, will have it too.

On CD/LP I have three different versions by David Oistrakh (Kondrashin, Malko and Eliasberg), one by Igor Oistrakh, one by Andreï Korsakov and one by Christian Altenburger. I prefer the one by Oistrakh/Kondrashin.

It is quite a difficult work, although not in strictly pyrotechnical sense.

January 17, 2006 at 12:44 PM · Thanks, Ronald. I live in Groningen, and the library there does not have it.

I ordered the CDs with David Oistrakh -- cannot go wrong with them, I think -- and depending on what I hear I'll perhaps buy the music. I cannot imagine being able to learn the piece in six weeks, so libraries are out anyhow.
