Help needed for: Violin concerto collection

May 17, 2005 at 08:20 PM · Hello!

I am collecting 20th century violin concertos. Thats what I got:

http://www.geocities.com/violinkonzerte2000/

Anything missing that you know? I am trying for completeness, so every hint on a missing recording (CD, LP, recorded broadcast performance, etc) is very welcome.

Thanks for your help!

Best,

Tobias

Willie M: First a response to the Heath work "Alone at the frontier":

I know that piece but it was never recorded to my knowledge, not even the premiere with Nigel Kennedy.

Mark L: Yes, I have the Martinon concerto, also with Szeryng. So we have the same recording I think.

Bram: And also thanks to your list. All your recordings I have too, and also a recording of the Pijper work. The rest is also unknown to me.

Thanks for your answers again!

That's an unbelievable knowledge of concertos you have!

June 13, 2006 at 11:12 PM · Greetings,

just to note that the Mendelssohn D minor came bac into fashion soemwhat over the last 2 or 3 years years. The recoridngs I am aware of (or not):

Monica Hugget (or one of those top Englsih female players...)

A Japanese violinist whose name I forget.

A well established young German soloist (another blank).

There are a few others. Usually the e minor is on the other side, as it were.

June 14, 2006 at 03:21 AM · Busoni VC & VS 2 - recorded by Frank Peter Zimmermann on Sony. I bought this and it was also given a great thumbs up by the latest Gramophone magazine.

June 14, 2006 at 04:40 AM · How about Waxman Tristan and Isolde Fantasy for solo violin and piano?

June 14, 2006 at 08:40 AM · What about Korngold's City Montage (a hotch-potch collection of Brahms VC, Mendelssohn VC, Paganini Moto Perpetuo, etc? It was on a disc by Nadia SS - music from the film Humoreske, which I jsut managed to buy in Singapore recently. The original had Issac Stern playing the music of the soundtrack.

June 14, 2006 at 01:27 PM · Thank you very much for all your lists and mentioned works! Most of the works I already know and have them on CD (right know about 2300 different works for violin and orchestra from the 20th century). But I had some troubles to encode the composers Aristotle wrote:

I don't know a composer called "Sharp" and also no recording of Gidon Kremer of his violin concerto. Can you give some hints about the composer and the recording?

I also don't know a recording of the violin concerto by Joseph Kaminski. Where can I get this one?

I don't know any work for violin and orchestra by Partos (only his "Yiskor", which is unfortunately just recorded for viola and orchestra). Or is there a recorded version for violin and orchestra available?

I would be pleased and grateful if you can help me in finding these works (if available).

Finally by the way: "Ruutavarta" is correctly called "Rautavaara". The composers of the Butterfly violin concerto are two: Ho Zhan Hao and Chen Kang. "McKenzie" is correctly spelled "Mackenzie"

Best regards,

Tobias

June 14, 2006 at 02:37 PM · There exist a recording By Josef Kaminski himself playing it from the early 50's.

But I don't know if it has been on cd.

June 24, 2006 at 07:06 AM · Dear Manuel Gigena,

thank you for your enormous list!

Nearly all of the mentioned works I already own, but I would be interested where to get the recording of the violin concerto by Eduardo Alemann?

Can you give any hints?

Thanks and best regards,

Tobias

March 23, 2007 at 11:32 PM · I have not heard of the one you just mentioned, but what about the Jolivet VC played by Isabelle Faust?

March 28, 2007 at 05:37 PM · Thanks Benny for the hint. I already know the Jolivet violin concerto, but I own the recording with Devy Erlih. I don't like the concerto very much, so one recordind is fairly enough.

Best,

Tobias

March 28, 2007 at 06:13 PM · I'm so impressed by everyone's knowledge... great job, guys, and thanks for making those lists available!

I really enjoy the music of Lera Auerbach. It's very much like Shostakovich and Schnittke. Though none of her violin concertos have been recorded yet (that I know of), Vadim Gluzman has made an excellent recording of some of her works for solo violin and violin/piano. You can even download them on iTunes.

Best wishes,

Maia

PS - Tobias, your list is so extensive that I don't think I could ever get around to listening to them all. If you can begin to narrow them down -- what are your favorites on the list? Which are the most "original?" Underappreciated?

March 28, 2007 at 07:59 PM · Two underappreciated 20th century concertos in my opinion are the Hindemith and the Menotti. (Tobias has both listed.)

March 28, 2007 at 10:26 PM · Are you familiar with the works of Eric Ewazen? He is primarily known for his works for brass, but I know he has written a concerto for violin and string orchestra as well. I haven't been able to get my hands on a recording or a copy of the music yet, but I'm hoping to! I emailed the composer about a year ago asking to purchase the (unpublished) concerto, and he promised to send it to me! ... but it never happened. I'm sure he's busy. In any case, the works I've heard for solo brass and brass ensemble (particularly the Western Fanfare for brass quintet) are really nice, so I'm hoping his music for violin is good as well.

March 29, 2007 at 09:25 AM · Mr. Heemskerk,

Breuninger recorded the 1st Lipinski concerto as well. Since years he has plans to record the 6 (7?) violin concertos by Eugène Ysaÿe too, but no results so far. Apart from one, that is. Sorry for being off-topic :-)

Ronald de Haas

The Hague/Netherlands

March 29, 2007 at 10:43 AM · Hallo Sarah,

I know Eric Ewazen's violin concerto, because it is commercially recorded! You can find it here and it is joy to listen to (but nothing special on the other hand):

http://www.amazon.com/Sejong-Plays-Ewazen-Eric/dp/B00008YJEF/ref=sr_1_5/002-3598077-2439267?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1175165064&sr=1-5

Hallo Ronald,

Ysaye wrote 8 violin concertos and destroyed 7 of them. So there is only a violin concerto no.8 and Breuninger also recorded all the other works for violin and orchestra that is left by Ysaye on this CD:

http://www.amazon.com/Eug%C3%A8ne-Ysa%C3%BFe-Works-Violin-Orchestra/dp/B000EQHRX8/ref=sr_1_1/002-3598077-2439267?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1175165164&sr=1-1

Best,

Tobias

March 29, 2007 at 11:16 PM · Yes, Ronald de Haas, my list of may 2005 of never recorded cd's is not up to date. After may 2005 Breuninger has recorded Ysaye8 and 1th Lipinski. I have them both and wrote about it on my blog. He also recorded some unrecorded De Beriot concerto's 2,4,7: http://www.sudbrackmusik.de/breuninger/breuninger.htm

Nikolay Yusupov has written 3 violinconcerto's. Also Bazzini (well known of Rondo de Lutins) has written 5 violinconcerto's, but is anywhere somewhere the full conductorscore? And there are more names of obscure composers who have written unrecorded (but good) violinconcerto's, like Emile Sauret for example.

April 3, 2007 at 02:24 PM · Tobias and Bram,

Thanks for the information on Breuninger playing de Bériot. That reminds me of my own violin lessons, forty years ago. Not to mention the concertos by Rode and Kreutzer I was supposed to study. I wonder whether anyone ever studied the Kreutzer concerto # 19 more recently :-)

A bit in doubt about Breuninger recording the one Ysaÿe concerto after (or in) 2005, because my recollection tells me that my copy is of earlier date. Maybe the recording was issued in 2005. I'll check when I'm home tonight.

Although I have renditions of the violin concertos by Moritz Moszkowski and Emil (Donna Diana) von Reznicek, I hope to find better ones, one day. I just don't know whether someone else ever went into the trouble to make a recording.

Ronald

June 12, 2007 at 12:17 AM · Sorry to correct, but Ysaye wrote one more concerto, for two violins, and a showpiece, "Amite," for two violins.

A manuscript of the double concerto should be

in the Sibley Music Library in Rochester, NY.

I had a copy of Amite, but only one page still

exists. One or both of them may be in the Library of Congress, for all those talented

Senator-violinists to use.

Ciao,

Joel

June 12, 2007 at 12:20 AM · Grazyna Bacewicz wrote seven violin concerti,

most of them in the 20th century.

You might be able to get some of them through

the Metzler Violin shop.

Am I missing something-- you are looking for

music, or recordings?

Hello Tobias and other concerto enthusiasts!

Four years later, and many discoveries afterwards, it's time I updated some of my findings.

To reiterate what I said last time, Sharp= Eliott Sharp's RE/ITERATIONS, supposedly for 14 solo violins, 2 violas, cellos, contrabassi, and percussions. My mistake on that part since it's more of a conceerto for more than one violin. (from his album TESSALATION ROW: SST 129)

I also don't know a recording of the violin concerto by Joseph Kaminski. Where can I get this one?

--In terms of Joseph (jascha) Kaminski, The composer HIMSELF performed it in Tel Aviv, February, 1954- Israel Philharmonic with Walter Susskind. No available recording is present. However, I managed to snag the manuscript reduction for violin and piano, and it's a killer in its own right! Sorry for not answering back sooner about it.

Seems that almost everybody knew about Castelnuovo-Tedesco (Heifetz Collection or EMI w/ Perlman and Mehta) and Bloch Violin Concerto (Totenberg, Vienna Opera Orchestra), but forgot about Kaminsky since he was majorly a performer and a composer, and was also a leading figure in Israel's musical life during his time (from mid 1930's on).

The concerto is also special since it was composed during the wage War of Independence for Israel (1947-1949). Seemingly after his performance five years later, there wasn't a recording of it since and is open for anybody to try.

QUOTE:

I don't know any work for violin and orchestra by Partos (only his "Yiskor", which is unfortunately just recorded for viola and orchestra). Or is there a recorded version for violin and orchestra available?

--Dedicated to Yehudi Menuhin, I'm still trying to find whether or not Menuhin performed live or on stage Odon Partos. HOWEVER, I discovered there's a recording of it under the HUNGAROTON label, Performed the the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra. (HCD #32450 Digital) with Song of Praise (Viola Concerto) and Shiluvium (Fusions)- Soloists: Vilmos Szabadi, Peter Barszony, and Andras Ligeti. Search it online and you'll find it.

I also would like to apologize for the typos that I entered before. It appeared that I was in a rush to spread out the message that I didn't fix it in time. So, in short, thanks for the clarifications, Tobias.

Also, Hyperion Records (UK), in case people haven't subscribed to it by now, has their Romantic Violin Concerto series up to date. Concertos from Saint-Saens, Stanford, Jeno Hubay, Moszkowski, Karlowicz, Coledridge-Taylor, Somervell, Taneyev, Arensky, Vieuxtemps, and David (Ferdinand)

I hope that clears most of the composers thus far. I'm still trying to find someone that played Reynaldo Hahn's Violin Concerto, the Brazilian that has an interesting piano concerto to boot as well.

See you guys, and happy hunting!

Though personally i find most of his music AND his personality to be thoroughly offputting (he was completely obnoxious and objectionable in unrealistic physical demands while colleagues and i were rehearsing his theatre-piece Cortege with a Canadian orchestra), R. Murray Schafer's violin concerto  "The Darkly-Coloured Earth: The Loneley Traveler" may be of interest to some. Former TSO concertmaster Jacques Israelievitch has recorded it on a CBC disk which features concertos for other instruments by contemporary Canadian composers.

As an individual with a Polish surname, i heartily approve of the mentions of the concerti by M. Karlowicz (early 20th century, very Romantic), and Andrzej Panufnik (more acerbic and chromatic, albeit with a gorgeous slow movement). Was in a Polish-Canadian orch. that gave the Canadian premiere of it in a very poorly-heated Toronto church. A very moving experience in the slow movement nonetheless...

Did anyone mention the 2nd Shostakovitch concerto? It gets highly overlooked compared to #1~

V. Repin has recorded the Myaskovsky concerto. Paired with Repin's Tschaik., it surely deserves a listening.

Actually had the chance to hear the world premiere of the Heath concerto in Minneapolis with the Nige whilst on a dark week when playing way up in Tundra, er, Thunder Bay. The electric violin sound was often so harsh as to be distorted, but i was much more impressed with the Minnesota Orch., especially with their performance of the Rach. Symphonic Dances in the first half of the concert.~

No doubt after this post has been added to the thread i will remember pieces i should have mentioned. Sigh...^^

Self-fulfilling prophecy...

Was actually in the world premiere of a Capriccio for violin and orchestra by Canadian oboist-composer Elizabeth (Betsy) Raum, with Krista Buckland as soloist. Ms. Buckland is still as far as i know principal 2nd violin in the COC orch. in Toronto. Raum's daughter, Erika, is an excellent violinist, having won the Szigeti competition in Hungary some years back. Used to have the dubious priviledge of competing against her in local music festivals...^^

Both mother and daughter now compose, and methinks Erika has also written works for violin, possibly with orch. accompaniment as well.

The senior Raum has actually written a very fine tuba concerto, as well as an attractive work for double orchestra. Was in the orch. for the world premieres of both those works too~

Ah, here's another one that hasn't been mentioned above (if it has, apologies): the concerto for violin and orch. by Rheinhold Gliere, of Russian Sailors' Dance and Ilya Murometz fame. Remember my first summer of NYOC, in 1990, tuning into a NPR broadcast from upstate new York while we were in residence at Brock University in St. Catherine's, Ontario. As we were listening, not having tuned in from the beginning, my colleagues and i all guessed the piece was something French, similar in idiom to the Chausson Poeme. Thus it was something of a surprise to hear it was by Gliere.

The Josef Suk Fantasia, opus 24, is a piece whose neglect is thoroughly inexplicable to me. Perhaps the fact it is in one long (c. 24 minutes) multi-sectional movement partially explains its difficulty for programming purposes, but it's far too beautiful to be as overlooked as it is.

Did anyone mention the Reger concerto? Its neglect on the other hand is completely understandable---it's c. 56 minutes long, and what i've seen of the violin part, it's exceedingly chromatic and of overwhelming difficulty. No doubt it takes phenomenal ability to pull it off, and one does wonder if the rewards justify the exertion. To be honest, though, haven't actually heard the one recording of which i know, with Susanne Lautenbacher as the indefatiguable soloist, so perhaps it's best to withhold judgement for now. Any of you folks heard it yet?

October 23, 2010 at 07:39 AM · I discovered today that William Schuman wrote a violin concerto. Premiered by Roman Totenberg. (I am singing a bunch of Schuman for his centenary this year.)

Violin concerto by Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson. Recorded with soloist Arve Tellefsen (who to my mind does the best job of the Nielsen concerto) and Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting. Larsson's music definitely deserves wider consideration; his suite for "A Winter's Tale" is very attractive indeed, while of his many concertinos, most (all-?) with string orchestra accompaniment, the one for trombone stands out in particular for its last movement, with the main tune remarkable reminiscent of the theme from "The Jetson's" cartoon...^^'

Lars-Erik Larsson's concerto was recorded by Leo Berlin and my request to hear it on BBC Radio 3 was played by the late Humphrey Carpenter about 12 years ago. He had though, made the mistake of playing Lars-Erik Larsson's continuo (or a piece with a similar name - I cannot recall what) a few weeks before and apologised for the error when he put it right.  Parts of the concerto reminds me of the music Bernard Herrmann wrote for the Hitchcock film ‘Psycho’. Carpenter later played my favourite interpretation of the Menotti concerto by Tossy Spivakovsky.  Other favourites include the fun to be had from the Lvov Violin Concerto. The only known recording by the highly talented Sergei Stadler, who adds the Arensky and Conus violin concerti on the CD.  The Reger is often truncated a little and the only full length version is by the great Susanne Lautenbacher – as previously stated. She also recorded one of my favourites, the Schumann violin concerto. She takes it quite slowly but such a lovely performance. The lovely Karlowitz violin concerto (now coming into fashion at long last – Little, Kennedy et al – has only one real interpreter – the marvelous Konstanty Kulka – who may be seen in full colour on ‘You Tube’ throwing it off with splendid élan. Tasmin little makes a great effort too though in her recent recording.
