Saint -Saens Cello concerto for viola?

March 1, 2005 at 06:05 AM · I was going through some of my Viola music and looking up other things the music companies published, and they have dvorak cello concerto and schubert's cello concerto, but nowhere did I find the Saint-Saens...Is there one in existence? I'm just asking this question simply because I've started a transcription of Saint-Saens for viola.

March 25, 2005 at 05:48 PM · Hi Mark,

Kalmus published a transcription of the Saint-Saens, though I don't know whether its still in print or not. There is also a transcription by Tertis of Elgar's cello concerto, published by Novello, if you're interested. What's the Schubert cello concerto? cant say I've heard of that before? Hope this helps

March 25, 2005 at 05:53 PM · There is a wonderful Schubert sonata for arpeggione that can be played on either viola or cello.

March 25, 2005 at 08:56 PM · I saw it at unt a few years back. The Schubert that is.

March 25, 2005 at 09:02 PM · Are you sure you don't mean Schumann?

Carl.

March 25, 2005 at 11:59 PM · maybe, it's been a long time.

March 27, 2005 at 02:10 PM · Schubert wrote the sonata for arpeggione. Schumann may have written cello sonatas.

March 27, 2005 at 02:59 PM · Vieuxtemps had several viola works; Mendelssohn had a great viola sonata. There are the sonata by Rubinstein. And of course the Bach's cello solo sonatas transcribed to the viola.

March 27, 2005 at 04:11 PM · If anyone is interested, there is also a pretty neat recording of the Elgar Cello Concerto transcribed for viola (Tertis arrangement) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Rivka Golani on viola.

March 27, 2005 at 09:52 PM · Yes, I have it. Tertis' transcription is fine, but I'm not satisfied with the version. About Tertis, I have by him one of the Brahms viola sonatas, and he was great! An other fine violist was Hindemith. Listen to him playing some of his own works.

March 29, 2005 at 10:21 PM · William Primrose, anybody?

March 30, 2005 at 03:00 AM · Saint-Saens Concerto No.1 op 33 for cello transcribed for VIOLA and Piano

Edwin Kalmus, New York. Kalmus Solo series, No. 4319.

This transcription is no longer in the Edwin F. Kalmus catalog. After research and checking I found that this is now in the Kalmus-Belwin (Warner Brothers) catalog, and up to a couple of years ago it may have been out of print. It is now in print with the last price being $11.95.
