I am looking for a very good recording of the Berg Violin Concerto. Which recordings do you think are the best? Thanks.
Mutter & Levine
kogan's is very good. i havent heard too many recordings of the berg though...
Grumiaux and Szeryng of course!
Zukerman's is very good.
I like the recording with Phillipe Hirshhorn, Pierre Bartholomee and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liege.
Don't forget Stern ,Menuhin & Perlman.
I have only heard Kogan's and it is played superbly. However, whether or not you like the Berg is your own business! I believe that Milstein said that the Berg is 'glorious'. I can't see why just yet!
Mutter's recording has got be my favorite recording of the Berg.
Perlman
I love Stern and Szeryng recordings. Somebody told me about Ferras' like the best recording from this concerto ever made, but I haven't heard it.
I got a free cd with a magazine of Kavakos playing it really wonderfully a couple of years ago. Is there anything that man can't play?
kavakos can't play hockey.
menuhin and kyung wha chung for the berg.
I enjoy the Menuhin recordings very much and was surprised to read a statement of Menuhin's to the effect that he didn't really understand the piece. (Or was that referring to the slice of rhubarb pie that Hepzibah slipped him after telling him it was cherry?)
Anybody heard Szeryng? I have his recording on an old Lp, but haven't yet poured my cleaning fluids etc. on it and played it, so I don't know what to expect. It's with Jean Martinon.
Szigeti. The 1945 live recording with Mitropoulos.
i really enjoy Ivry Gitlis' recording (there is a video on youtube when he is quite old already, but i speak of his studio recording)
also, Ilya Kaler's recording is fantastic
I got to know it growing up with the Grumiaux recording. You can't go wrong with that. About 10-15 years back I also saw on tv, a live performance with Mutter and the NY Philharmonic that was also excellent. True to form, Grumiaux's take on it is more reserved and subtle, and exquisitely etched. Mutter is more passionate.
Grumiaux, & Menuhin..
