Fun/Rare violin music

September 15, 2004 at 06:55 PM · Does anyone have any fun and/or rare violin music that they know(sheet music, not recording)? Whatever difficulty they are.

I've just bought Shchedrin's Balalaika today, quite fun.

October 23, 2004 at 02:42 PM · I didn't want to start a new topic...so I'll post here...

I'm listening to Franz Berwald's Violin Concerto in C sharp minor, Op. 2...

...it was written by Berwald as a challenge for a boastful relative who said he could play anything...yet when it was performed it had poor reviews and in the central movement the audience actually laughed because the accompaniement was considered totally ridiculous.

I've listened to it twice now...and it has some nifty bits and pieces...but nothing I found ridiculous, but then again maybe I'm hearing something different than an 1821 audience heard.

Is anyone familiar with this work? Is it really that hard to play? And why was it considered so amusing at the time?

October 23, 2004 at 04:19 PM · I have played it.

What recording do you listen to? Rinborg (boring) or Tellefsen?

It is quite challeging at times, particulary the key (C#-minor).

Franz wrote it when he was 25 (he was a late bloomer, his best compositions where written much later in life) and is not one of his best works, but I like is, especially yhe end of the third movment.

It was written to his brother August.

October 23, 2004 at 04:58 PM · I have the Ringborg...

...I'll have to see if I can find a copy of the other recording to compare...

Thanks Mati!

October 23, 2004 at 06:58 PM · Korngold's Concerto in D always "fun."

There seems to be some subaudible Shostakovich themes imbedded in the music.

October 23, 2004 at 09:36 PM · This isn't really a suggestion, more of a comment. Right now I'm playing Dance of the Tumblers from "Snow Maiden" and it's fun, although I don't know if it's exactly rare.

The reason why I say this isn't really a suggestion is because it's a very easy piece that isn't very long. But if you don't care about the easiness, then go ahead and play it! It's a orchestra piece, though...

October 23, 2004 at 11:55 PM · Does anyone know where can I get a copy of the Brahms' counterpoint to the Presto from Bach's BVW1001?

October 24, 2004 at 09:17 AM · In his piano books.

October 24, 2004 at 09:59 AM · ......

I mean the violin version, played by, I think, Ricci.

October 24, 2004 at 12:38 PM · He playes it exactly as Brahms wrote it in his piano book.

It is a piano piece where Ricci has splitted up the right and the left hand.

Anyway, I really love the Tzigane...although it's more common now and days, but the music is hard to come by!
