Does anyone have any fun and/or rare violin music that they know(sheet music, not recording)? Whatever difficulty they are.
I've just bought Shchedrin's Balalaika today, quite fun.
Strauss violin concerto
hm... Strauss is good, but not rare enough...
I didn't want to start a new topic...so I'll post here...
I'm listening to Franz Berwald's Violin Concerto in C sharp minor, Op. 2...
...it was written by Berwald as a challenge for a boastful relative who said he could play anything...yet when it was performed it had poor reviews and in the central movement the audience actually laughed because the accompaniement was considered totally ridiculous.
I've listened to it twice now...and it has some nifty bits and pieces...but nothing I found ridiculous, but then again maybe I'm hearing something different than an 1821 audience heard.
Is anyone familiar with this work? Is it really that hard to play? And why was it considered so amusing at the time?
I have played it.
What recording do you listen to? Rinborg (boring) or Tellefsen?
It is quite challeging at times, particulary the key (C#-minor).
Franz wrote it when he was 25 (he was a late bloomer, his best compositions where written much later in life) and is not one of his best works, but I like is, especially yhe end of the third movment.
It was written to his brother August.
I have the Ringborg...
...I'll have to see if I can find a copy of the other recording to compare...
Thanks Mati!

I was very tempted to pick up a copy of the Berwald violin concerto the other day. Great concerto!
Charlie Chaplin's Smile
Dutilleux violin concertos
Maxwell Davies' Spell for Green Corn the MacDonald dances
those are just a few off the top of my head. :)
Aria from the Suite for Two Violins by Albert Stoessel. Beautiful!

P.S. Own, Ehnes has a great recording of the Bruch #3.
How about Antonio Bazzini's La Ronde Des Lutins (The Round of the Goblins)
or
Rosin Eating Zombies form Outer Space (for string orch)

i know, i have it. I havn't heard any others.
Korngold's Concerto in D always "fun."
There seems to be some subaudible Shostakovich themes imbedded in the music.
This isn't really a suggestion, more of a comment. Right now I'm playing Dance of the Tumblers from "Snow Maiden" and it's fun, although I don't know if it's exactly rare.
The reason why I say this isn't really a suggestion is because it's a very easy piece that isn't very long. But if you don't care about the easiness, then go ahead and play it! It's a orchestra piece, though...

Does anyone know where can I get a copy of the Brahms' counterpoint to the Presto from Bach's BVW1001?
In his piano books.
......
I mean the violin version, played by, I think, Ricci.
He playes it exactly as Brahms wrote it in his piano book.
It is a piano piece where Ricci has splitted up the right and the left hand.
achron concerto
Hehe. I've played Rosin Eating Zombies From Outer Space. The Girl who stoof up to do the scream solo was sitting right behind me. and she was loud...
Amy Beach's Romance for violin and Piano, and Arriaga's hungarian fantasy.
I've never heard of Rosin Eating Zombies From Outer Space! Is there a recording available? I'd love to hear it...sounds funny!
Anyway, I really love the Tzigane...although it's more common now and days, but the music is hard to come by!
