I am searching for a good piano quintet (piano+quartet). I have amassed a list, but I don't know which are good compositions. I do not think we are ready for something as difficult as brahms. So any suggestions would be great!
thanks
I second the Dvorak Piano Quintet in A major. I just think it is just absolutley sublime and beautiful. Though the violin parts are not as hard, it really works the cello, viola and piano.
schumann is good, its not as difficult as brahms.
Schubert's 'Trout' is always an excellent choice if you are willing to substitute the second violinist with a bass player.
Dohnanyi wrote 2 piano quintets, I've played the 1st & would recommend it as definitely being easier than the Brahms
Faure wrote 2 piano quintets
Elgar wrote one
Franck wrote one
ooh good one, his chamber music is great
go with the schumann!! all the movements are fantastic...although the piano part is quite hard, i think.
yeah it is
THanks a lot for your suggestions. We are all 10th graders and are quite busy. I'm not sure if the pianist is up to
such a big project right now. I'll have to confer with the others, but maybe we can do one in a few years.

September 11, 2004 at 04:32 PM · Dvorak A major is lovely, and somewhat less difficult than Brahms. Schummann, too, I think, though I don't know that one well. Shostakovitch is tough, but maybe doable. Good luck!
(Brahms is not quite as hard as you might think for the string players, but the pianist is usually up to his/her ears.)
