Which would you suggest for someone who has just finished Mozart 5: Bruch concerto No.1 in g minor, or Lalo Symphonie Espagnole?? Also, how do they compare in difficulty musically and technically?
Read the Violin Repertoire page on this site. :)
Go with Bruch.
Uhmmmm.. Tough one.. Hmmph.. I would go with the Bruch. It's a personal favorite of mine.
Lalo is really pushing it.. You need to learn the Mendelssohn before Lalo. It's a good start off before doing Lalo.
Whatever you do, do not play a piece that has movements that are too difficult for you. If the 3rd mvt of Bruch is too hard, don't play the first two! Same with the 5th of Lalo. Generally, Bruch is a very difficult concerto in terms of really playing it well, but Lalo has more notes to learn. Lalo sounds more logical. As other alternatives, I would suggest St-Saens 3 or Wienawski 2.
bruch is harder musically IMO, but lalo is a good deal harder than bruch in terms of technique i feel. the third movement of the bruch is deceptively hard however, if you practice hard, and practice double stops, you should be able to learn it. just take a look at it, a decision like this should be your teachers in the end of course.
I would go with the Bruch then mendelssohn finally there after, the lalo
I am having so much trouble believing this!! I always thought the mendelssohn was harder than the lalo, because you need to be more musical with it. I also thought you don't need much of a personality to play the lalo because it is so virtuostic. I cannot believe mendelssohn is easier than lalo.
Greetings,
it`s not.
Cheers,
Buri
Listen to Buri!
They both present different challenges and different demands of the performer...I would say overall, all things considered that Mendelsohnn would be harder though. :)
I'd say Mendelssohn is harder.
I will have to disagree. I definetly think Lalo is much harder than the Mendelssohn. Both in terms of musicality, and technique. Mendelssohn is still one of the most loved concertos, but if your planning on playing all 5 movements of the Lalo, it really requires a very musical player.
So I guess this means that I should attack the Bruch before the Lalo??
Never mind, I decided I will do the Lalo. I like it WAY better than the Bruch.
good choice, but i could never like one more than the other, both of these pieces are very close to me.
I would prefer Lalo first, because Lalo better fits to my character and playing style. Bruch is musically more complicated, except of 3rd movement: it reminds me 3rd mv-t of Brahms.
Yeah I was just about to point that out Rita. The last movements of Bruch and Brahms are so similar. Accept that the Bruch fits very well on the violin.
i still find the last movement to be just as musically demanding as the first
i think Bruch sounds more musical than the Lalo but both are lovely in their own rights!
Actually...........would it make sense to do the Mendelssohn next, by any chance??
So... somewhat related but maybe not. . . what if you learned the first two movements of the bruch, and then ended up in Honduras without a teacher (and you're the only violinist in the city you're in), and really want to learn the 3rd movement? any suggestions on how to practice it solo?
