Can anyone recommend music stores in London/or elsewhere in the UK? Just to browse around for strings, sheet music, bows whatever...
Sheet music: Foyle's, Schott's, Chappell's.
Strings/bows: (not really for random browsing but anyway) Phelp's, Guivier's.
Carl.
And Kensington Music Shop, Barbican Music Shop. Foote for bow and cases as well.
If you like an intimate atmosphere and have a car, try Bridgewood and Neitzert in North London. Violin family, no sheet music.
Yeah, they do great rehairs! Their cheap instruments aren't as good value for money as Guivier's, though
This thread is 9 years old. I need some updates if there is any.
I would be in London in a few days time and am planning to buy some sheet music.
Chappell's is a great place to browse, has a huge selection in stock, and has a central location. It has moved since the original post - it's now in Wardour Street. Smaller but also nice is Schott in Great Marlborough Street. Foyle's isn't far from there and has a second hand section, but for new sheet music it isn't as much fun to browse because everything is filed in drawers. Also nearby for second hand sheet music and books about music is Travis and Emery in Cecil Court.
All these are off or near Oxford Street, but I think the Boosey and Hawkes shop on Oxford Street must have gone as I've never seen it.
Boosey and Hawkes is still a good shop, slightly off the beaten track although still in central London at Brittens Music at this address:
16 Wigmore Street
London, W1U 2RF
If you want to buy CDs, the best classical music CD shop I know is just round the corner from Chappells:
Harold Moores Records Ltd,
2 Great Marlborough Street,
London, W1F 7HQ,
It is excellent and Tim, the manager, is an expert on classical recordings.
Schott's is an excellent shop, I can't recommend it enough.
I never let a visit to London pass without going to the big HMV shop in Oxford Street. It has a really nice classical department which - sadly - is a rarity these days and I always seem to come out with some kind of bargain after an hour or so of happily browsing around.
If you're in central Bristol (UK) there are two excellent violin shops within easy reach.
Bristol Violin Shop http://www.bristol-violin-shop.co.uk/
Cremona House Violin Shop http://www.violinvaluations.com/
Both shops are within very easy walking distance of each other, and just as close is the workshop of John Stagg, Master Bowmaker http://www.johnstaggbows.co.uk/
For sheet music there is, not very far away from the above, Providence Music at 1 St George's Road Bristol BS1 5UL (tel. 01179276536).
Their online business is http://www.providencemusic.co.uk/
My request is a little more specific......any recommended violin shops in London, that have a good selection of cases?

Even better, look in the phone directory to find the one nearest you.
