I have been playing the violin for a little over 2 years now, and am wondering if there are any really great romantic violin concerto's out there that are relatively easy. I love the romantic period concerto's, especially the Mendelssohn e minor and Tchaikovsky D Major, but those are definitely too advanced for me right now. I'm currently working on Vivaldi's a minor concerto, op. 3 no. 6 to give you an idea of where I'm at; I've done a ton of Baroque stuff, though, and would really like to do a romantic piece. I guess it doesn't have to be a concerto really, but just something challenging, but still attainable. Any recommendations?
Or you could try the Dvorak Sonatina. Around Grade 6 level, romantic and dramatic. 1-3 positions, some double stopping. Nice second mvmt.
Dvorak's 4 Romantic Pieces are lovely. The 2-4th mvts are probably too difficult at this point, but the first is worth a go. The Sonatina is very nice too.
Hi! There's loads of great pieces you could play.. off the top off my head:
Kreisler: Menuetto Di Tempo
Debussy: La Plus Que Lente
Reiding: Concerto Op.21(great!)
Dvorak: Sonatine (both as mentioned above)
Hubay: Bolero
Moffat: Intrada
Sarasate:Playera (bit more advanced)
Tenhave: Allegro Brillant
Carl Bohm: Introduction and Polonaise
Elgar: Chanson Du Matin
Bach Double Concerto in D Minor (ok..that's not Romantic but it's a great piece and technically playable!)
There's so many more I just can't remember right now.. Anyway hope that helped!
Oh! just realised you said Concerto, not piece. Well, then I'd say
Rieding Op.21
Accolay
Nardini (E Minor)(more advanced)
De Beriot
Kabalevsky
Thanks, everybody! I think I might be going to a music store this weekend so I'll try to check some of this stuff out. Sounds great! Of course, my teacher might have other plans...
Gluck: Melodie
Nardini: Larghetto
Schumann: Traumerei
Faure: Apres Un Reve
Bach: Arioso
Debussy: Beau Soir
Londonderry Air Farewell To Cucullain
Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart
Rick, you mentioned Shumann's Traumerai; are you talking about the one Joshua Bell arranged with somebody to put on his Romance of the Violin CD? Because it's originally for solo piano.
Thanks,
-Candace

Yes the one Bell performs on his CD. There is an arrangement for violin and piano also. Check out, Sheetmusicplus.com or frankmusiccompany.com, they have a copy of this piece for Violin and Piano. If you can't find it, I'll send you a copy of the one I have. Good Luck!
Thanks again, Rick; I found it on sheetmusicplus.com! The other site looks really cool too; seems to have a lot. I'm also considering checking out the Swan by Saint-Saens- does anyone know what level that is, or what positions it goes into?
The swan would be an excellent choice for a good begginer piece. I don't think it goes out of first position. It may go into third, but no higher then that. When my friend performed it he went up into 6th and 7th position on the last passage, but that was just because he wanted to end it with alot of romantic slides.
Okay, I'll probably see if my teacher thinks it would do me any good to learn it. Thanks!

March 10, 2004 at 06:40 AM · If you are still only comfortable in the 1st-3rd positions you could try the O.Rieding op21 in A minor which although it is not a famous romantic concerto is swoonily flashy and all my students love it.It is infact the concerto I give everyone after the Vivaldi A minor. If you want something more challenging and are confortable in higher positions you could try the Accolay Concerto which has also been recorded by Perlman.
