Who has the best recording of the Mozart concertos (#3,4 and 5). Are there any recordings of the Ysaye cadenzas?
Mozart 5-Mutter, Thibaud, Milstein
Mozart 3-Grumiaux, Mutter, Szigeti
Mozart4-Kreisler, Milstein, Stern
There is a very beautiful set by Josef Suk. It doesn't say who wrote the cadenzas, but they're not the usual ones (Joachim?) that everyone plays.
And Grumiaux gets my vote in anything Classical or Baroque.
For historically-oriented - check out Monica Huggett.
An absolutly incredible No.5? 0istrakh with Kondrachine and URSS orch (1947).Its better than Konwitshny. To me, the best version I ever heard.
Itzak Perlman's set of all the concerti with James Levine is a landmark. Stylish, lively, and great fun to listen to.
Greetings,
I forgot a good one. You can nw get n DVD George Szell conducting Beethoven five and Erica Morini in the concerto 5. Szell was a mjaor authority on Mozart interpretation and Morini , although well past her prime (about 70?), shows some truly elegant, th0oughtful and precise playing. This is worth watching a great deal.
Cheers,
Buri
I like Perlman and Zukerman's recordings.
Grumiaux for all of them.
Perlman- no1
Anne Sophie Mutter no2-no3
Szigeti,Perlman no4
Heifetz no5
George
Perlman's
I agree. Perlman all the way. Not too schmultzy for Mozart, but cute.
i personally really like heifetz. alot of people dont though. milstein is probably my other fav. dont really like perlman's though. to me ( and this is just my opinion) his sound is wirey and something else. i just can never seem to put my finger on it...his playing is not my favorite thing.
And what about F.P. Zimmermann ???
I like his recordings a lot. (Jorg Faerber, Wurtemberg Chamber Orchestra)
I have Zimmermann's no5. Nothing special, don't you think?
I saw Zimmermann play the no. 3 with Berlin. The playing was somewhat "stiff".
i've never heard the ysaye cadenzas, who did them? that would be interesting...nothing like his sonatas i hope, that wouldn't exactly fit in a mozart concerto :)
Ysaye's cadenzas are actually quite nice and their nothing like his sonatas. I think Francescatti played the Ysaye cadenzas.

March 1, 2004 at 12:05 AM · Greetings,
with Mozart concerttos you just pays your money and takes your pick...
The big three are always, to my mind, Heifetz, Oistrakh and Milstein. So whichever one you like, you buy. However, with the Mozart there are also many recordings by less indeividualistic players that get very deeply inot the music and are well worth exploring.
This would certianly include Szeryng, Grumiaux and a personal favorite, Szigeti. Szigeti`s recodring of Mozart four is very profound and should be given very serious consideration.
Menuhin is good too in his early recoring (s). There is a disc with Enescu , also playing the Bach double. But, this is very old fashioned Mozart, very musch ionto the string and , for me at least, a little diifcult to digest. Although Menuhins Mozart three slow movement is terrific.
In general, you can`t go far wrong if you buy Oistrakh to start with...
Cheers,
