Best Summer Camps for the advanced violinist?

March 31, 2017 at 01:09 AM · Hi, so I'm starting to think of opportunities that will help me grow as a violinist and will increase my chances of going to a music school, or just help with my activities for college.

What are some good music camps that are challenging to get into? Like I know National Youth Symphony is one, any other big music summer things for violin in the East Coast?

Thanks,

David

March 31, 2017 at 03:03 AM · I'd be kind of surprised if deadlines haven't drawn pretty close or even passed for "high level" programs for summer 2017. For example deadline for Heifetz Institute was "extended" ... to Feb 15.

Application deadline was Feb 24 but the website says it will accept applications until all positions are filled. I'd be surprised if there are still violin openings but it doesn't hurt to ask.

March 31, 2017 at 03:29 AM · Yes, I know, but I cannot do it until next year anyways because I'm in eight grade right now. I am planning on auditioning next year.

March 31, 2017 at 03:58 AM · Summit Music Festival in New York is still taking applications (looks like they had some kind of issue with their online applications that's caused a delay). My teacher's on the faculty there. There's no age limit there, but I think there are repertoire expectations that are probably beyond your playing level.

March 31, 2017 at 04:58 AM · You can also occasionally ask for exceptions to age limits, especially if you have a reference that knows the faculty at the place you are interested in. You would need to show that you play as near the top amongst those they do accept, and also be very stubborn when speaking to whoever is in charge of admissions.

You can also look in Europe if you are willing to travel. Deadlines tend to be just a couple of weeks or even days before the start of the workshop. They happen year round as well. The typical format is a series of masterclasses with one person, though other types do exist. To do this though, you would need to probably string a few of the programs together, as they usually don't run more than a week, and sometimes just a few days. You would also need to find your own accommodations. To find specific masterclasses, you could ask your teacher if they recommend specific people ( it is usually about the teacher themselves and not the name of the program over there ).
