Does anyone know of any pieces similar to Devil's Trill Sonata by Tartini? I'm in need of more very emotional violin pieces!
Also if anyone know any pieces similar to the ones listed below please comment
~ Concerto for Violin in D Minor by Tartini
~La Follia by Vivaldi
~ La Stravaganza Concerto No. 2 in E Minor by Vivaldi
For ideas based on what is out there and currently being performed I'd look at the discography of Baroque ensembles such as Il Giardino Harmonico, or soloists such as Viktoria Mullova (when in her Baroque mode). There are of course many more excellent examples of ensembles and soloists.
To be politically correct you should not call the sonata a song. Songs are sung by singers.
Unless they're "songs without words."
At the risk of sounding churlish, I've noticed that nowadays any piece of music is being referred to as a song. Do we thank ITunes and MP3 players? Bach's Sonatas & Partitas -- just a collection of songs. Beethoven's Violin Concerto, is it one song or three?
I think it's okay. I doubt the OP will write "list of songs" at the top of his recital program. If he's actually playing Tartini on the violin, the Devil's Trill no less, he got my respect.
There are ordinary songs, and then there are songs my mother taught me...

Thanks for this video, Paul. Hits just the right note! The OP's got my respect too if he's playing Tartini!

March 7, 2017 at 02:57 AM · If you have never played La Folia by Corelli (I know you said Vivaldi), then I recommend it highly, it's the first piece in Suzuki Book 6 but you can also get a standalone edition that has more variations. That's an absolutely brilliant piece, it's dripping with emotion. There is some great Veracini too, especially his famous Largo, and personally I think there is a lot of musical content in the Bach A Minor Concerto. Also look at the Handel sonatas, the first movements of the F major and D major sonatas are very touching, and they can be performed paired with the corresponding second movements if you don't want to play the whole sonata. Listen to Hiro Kurosaki's recordings of the Handel -- excellent.
But if you can play the Devil's Trill okay then some of these things might be rather too simple for you. If you want some riveting baroque violin music it's hard to do better than Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Also look at the Vitali Chaconne.
