Dvorak Violin Solos

August 15, 2016 at 06:06 PM · Hello! Dvorak is one of my favorite composers. He has some really great stuff for the violin. I wanted to know if he wrote any other solos that I haven't mentioned.

Violin Concerto

Sonata

Sonatina

Romance

4 Romantic Pieces

Any additions would be great!

August 15, 2016 at 10:06 PM · Interesting, I'll check it out.

There are also more than a few arrangements of "Humoresque" to choose from.

August 16, 2016 at 12:33 PM · If you ever get into a string orchestra and you have some input into what they play, Dvorak's "Serenade for Strings" is very good. (The Serenade for Strings by Josef Suk is perhaps even better, and it's in the same genre, which makes sense considering Suk was Dvorak's student and protege. Therefore you should look for compositions by Suk for the violin as well.)

August 16, 2016 at 06:48 PM · He wrote a Mazurek in e minor that is very exciting (check out recordings by Mutter and Suwanai).

August 16, 2016 at 07:01 PM · Thanks! I'll look at them. I'm sort of a Dvorak obsessor

August 17, 2016 at 02:08 PM · The Mazurek mentiones by Mr. Sords was performed live by Oistrakh-check youtube! Love the piece-underrated and rarely played.

I like the Suwanai, which I have, but please check the Naxos collection of these Dvorak pieces. Qian Zhou does them great justice, plus you'll hear more beautiful rarities. I'll check later and let you know about one piece that I particularly love, along with the Mazurek.

August 17, 2016 at 04:23 PM · Great!

August 18, 2016 at 02:22 PM · https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YQ0yTfytyg There you go-the Capriccio-Rondo di Concerto, B81. Let me know if you ever see this programmed at any Concert Hall ever (kind of joking, in a sad way.) It's such a beautiful work, full of expression, gaiety, and melancholy all at once.

(Edited-anyone can help me find a printed copy of the work above, used or new. Was only published a few times, according to worldcat.org.; will pay a reasonable sum for your kind assistance. I disagree with the general critics' assessment of the piece, and want to work on it.)p

August 20, 2016 at 10:51 AM · Paul, wasn't Suk also Dvorak's son-in-law?

Jacob, some 30 years ago a contralto with whom I was performing the Brahms viola-piano songs (I was standing in for my injured father) told me that at a later date she was due to perform the Dvorak Ten Biblical Songs, Op 99. They must be playable on the violin, as must other songs that Dvorak wrote.

Joseph Suk wasn't Dvorak's only pupil. There is also a violin sonata (Op 9) by Oskar Nedbal.
