A violin by Ch. J.B. Collin Mezin

March 7, 2016 at 09:31 PM · want to buy a violin for my son. He is 14, a good player.

Saw a violin by Ch. J. B. Collin Mezin

Rue du Faub Poissonniere, No 10

How much do you think worth?

Would $15000 too much?

March 8, 2016 at 01:22 AM · As far as I know, Collin-Mezin is a respected and known (at least to me) figure in French luthierie, and I don't believe that 15k for a good model is excessive at all, and in the realm of good quality violins that's quite a reasonable price. I've eyed a few of his violins but never gotten my hands on one.

Thank you.

March 8, 2016 at 02:46 AM · You saw a violin labelled Collin - Mezin as you described or you saw a violin certified as a Collin - Mezin by a knowledgeable dealer? There are many Collin - Mezin labelled violins that aren't C - M.

If it is a C - M in good condition the price would be right from what I remember. They can be very good fiddles.

March 8, 2016 at 01:56 PM · I own a Collin-Mezin that needs a good home. Not the same model, but my teacher liked it very much. Let me know if you have interest. Much less than 15K. Thanks.

March 8, 2016 at 02:52 PM · Is there anyway I could try?

I am interested.

Thanks

March 8, 2016 at 03:34 PM · hmm.... we should probably take this conversation off the discussion board....but, I am not sure how to do this?? I don't want to blast either of our email addresses to everyone :-)

Perhaps someone on the discussion knows the best way to do this??

Thanks.

March 8, 2016 at 04:08 PM · A few years ago I saw a Collin-Mezin at a shop. I don't remember exactly what they were asking but it was in the vicinity of $15k. I remember thinking that was way too much. It was a loud violin but I didn't find it to have an especially pleasing sound under the ear. In addition it was not a particularly handsome instrument, whereas the one that Evan linked, which sold for $5900, is very a very pretty violin.

I am away from that store, don't have a trial chance. Probably when I try for a few days, would feel differently.

But want to buy a nice violin still.

March 9, 2016 at 05:03 AM · It's been a while but I do remember playing some Collin - Mezins that sounded good.

The Tarisio fiddle was estimated between $5000 and $8ooo and went for $5000 + 900. Who knows why the violin ended up on the lowest end of the estimate; it looked pretty enough. Maybe the sound or the condition was a bit of a problem.

Retail prices are around twice the auction prices in this kind of price range I thought. So $15000 for a violin in good condition is not way out of the norm.

Here a nice one sold by Kim Tipper for 16000 Canadian a while ago:

March 9, 2016 at 05:13 AM · Consider brand new instruments by modern living makers. You can get a good, new violin for under $10k if you are willing to consider instruments from China, Poland, etc.
