I am trying to find information on Haydn's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G. No, that's not a typo. I have two sources that refer to it. One is the Wikepedia list of Concertos by Joseph Haydn. The other is a "long-lost" concert program from a concert I attended in 1981. The violin soloist was a young Mary Larionoff (later Maria Larionoff of the Seattle Symphony) and the concert was held In the Little Theater of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. The performance was memorable and for about the last year or so I've been trying to figure out just which Haydn concerto she had played. Now it appears that it's a little-known and little-recorded Haydn concerto, but I'd like to get a recording and the sheet music. What's the story with this concerto? Can anyone help?
Why not just contact Maria Larionoff herself and inquire? I know she's on the Facebook and possibly on Twitter. Besides finding out exactly what she played and where to possibly get said piece, like most I'm sure she'd enjoy talking a little about it and its history.
Thank you for that suggestion. My OP wasn't getting much response.
I have No. 2 in G published by Peters, which I purchased years ago. So, it exists, and has been recorded. Not sure why there is a question about this!
Hi,
Im a little puzzled too. I have the same edition some where. It is a charming concerto that pave sthe way to Mozart and so on very nicely. Fairly standard repertoire. There is one well know teacher on this site who uses it a lot.
Cheers,
Buri
There's a marvellous live performance on YouTube by Vilmos Szabadi.
Interesting comment, Raymond. I think you might be right.
Two concertos in G by Haydn (Joseph/Michael?) - there is ample scope for confusion here! The G major concerto I have worked on is "number 4", apparently by Joseph Haydn, and the score is in IMSLP under his name. This is the one wonderfully performed by Vilmos Szabadi and the Budapest Strings in the YouTube videos:

The other equally delightful "Haydn" concerto in G - the one that is in IMSPL as a manuscript under the name of Michael Haydn - is here performed by Barnabas Kelemen with the Erkel Ferenc Chamber Orchestra:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbfcbHKeKmM in which the submitter identifies it as "J. Haydn - Hob VIIa:G1 - Violin Concerto in G major (Michael Haydn)".
I'm still none the wiser :)

April 27, 2015 at 08:17 PM · I'm not aware of a second G major concerto by Joseph Haydn. From what I understand there is some question amongst musicologists as to whether the concerto # 4 in G was actually composed by Haydn himself. Is it possible this concerto was written by his younger brother, Michael Haydn? There is a link on IMSLP to his G major concerto manuscript(it's an excellent manuscript).
