Can a Bon musica shoulder rest fit in a BAM hightech contoured case?

May 19, 2014 at 06:15 PM · I have been eyeballing the BAM cases, in particular BAM hightech contoured

The only thing keeping me back is whether my bonmusica shoulder rest would fit in the case, without having to undo the shoulder rest adjustments

I've tried to see if the other BAM hightech slim would fit the bonmusic SR in a friend's case, but it doesn't - the curve at the neck doesnt allow for the bonmusica - and the tapered ends of the case (both sides) do not have enough room for the "S" shape of the SR to squees in anyway

May 20, 2014 at 04:05 PM · Sorry, I cannot help you. I'm a Bobelock person.

I bought a Wooden Shaped (1007) for my first violin and kept my Bon Musica separate.

When I upgraded to a better violin I eventually ended up with a Bobelock Wooden Oblong (1002). My selection was based on the Bobelock's Oblong having an outside pocket large enough to hold the Bon Musica. But I do have to rotate the feet 90°.

I tried a Half Moon (1047), but could not fit the Bon Musica in it's pocket.

With the Contoured, you would probably have to have a separate pull bag attached to the outside of the case, or a similar solution.

I know that when I took my violin in for a checkup, the owner of the store was very interested in how the Bon Musica fit in the pocket. She was my inspiration to try the Bon Musica and I would say that her reaction probably indicated that the Bon Musica is a difficult Shoulder Rest to fit in a case. It is definitely longer than most other Shoulder Rest I have seen..

I just realised that not all of my post actually got through

The 2nd part of it was me measuring the height of my Bonmusic SR - at its tallest (the curve of the S which sits on my shoulder/curves round the top of my shoulder) it is 17cm while the depth of the BAM case is 18cm - which theoretically means the SR could fit sideways (ie parallel )in the space next to the violin neck.

I've checked out the curvature of the contoured and it looks deep in the pictures, and is certainly deeper than the Slim BAM i'm describing in my first post.

Dimensions of the BAM contoured

i was going to take my SR to the shop which had the BAM contoured on sale, but its sold out now and I'll need to go looking anew for shops which have one in store

Mircea - I was hoping I'd have to avoid undoing the adjustments!

And hi-figh Patrick, I'm currently a Bobelock oblong person and I got this case for the storage. But now i'm thinking of having a secondary lighter case :)

I've also heard about attaching a pouch outside the case for the bonsmusica and that might be an alternative to stressing about having a case which will fit the SR

May 21, 2014 at 05:01 AM · When my daughter was using a Bon musica, she always kept it out of the case (bam hi tech contoured), at one point in a pouch attached to the case, but then later just in her music bag. Basically, it didn't fit. Or it might have been barely possible to fit it, perhaps, but not without it touching the violin or being too close to it for her comfort (can't remember). In any event, it was just a little too cramped.

May 21, 2014 at 12:02 PM · I have a Bonmusica which I use rarely, but when needs be it travels in the shoulder bag I use for sheet music - I don't really like carrying music in the violin case.

The Bonmusica, although quite a good and adaptable product as far as shoulder rests go, is too much of a fuss to disassemble in order to get it into a violin case. I've seen a couple occasions where a player has unfortunately lost one of the vital screws on the floor during the disassembly.
