I'm planning on auditioning for NYO USA in November, but I'm not sure if I even have a chance. I can't afford to pay for private lessons but I practice all the time. (I was 3rd chair 1st violin in the Oklahoma All-state orchestra this year, if that gives you an idea of where I am at right now). I was thinking of auditioning with either the 3rd movement of the Mendelssohn or the 1st movement of the Tchaikovsky, any ideas/opinions? And on a scale from community college to Curtis, how hard is it to get into NYO? Thanks. :)

But they do like diversity and they get a lot of kids from NYC area, Chicago, Boston etc, so your location may help you. NYO isn' as ridiculously hard to get into as Curtis but it is selective enough that your audition needs be as flawless as you can make it. I've never done NYO myself but I have friends who have, they all loved it so good luck!!!
