Elgar violin sonata discography

October 9, 2013 at 04:26 AM · What are your favorite recordings of the Elgar violin sonata? For recordings before the 80s, I know of:

Albert Sammons and William Murdoch

Max Rostal and Colin Horseley

J. Tryon and J. La Montaine

Alan Loveday and Leonard Cassini

Hugh Bean and David Parkhouse

Sidney Weiss, Jeanne Weiss

Marjorie Hayward and Una Bourne (incomplete?)

The Weiss Duo

Yehudi Menuhin and Hepzibah Menuhin

For more recent recordings, I know of:

Midori and Robert McDonald

Maxim Vengerov and Revital Chachamov

Nigel Kennedy and Peter Pettinger

Charlie Siem and Andrei Korobeinikov

Michael Davis and Rosemary Platt

Daniel Hope and Simon Mulligan

Lydia Mordkovitch and Julian Milford

Jonathan Crow and Paul Stewart

Simone Lamsma and Yurie Miura

Elmar Oliveira and Robert Koenig

Marat Bisengaliev and Benjamin Frith

Efi Christodoulou and Margaret Fingerhut

I only have Menuhin and Vengerov (heard Siem's and didn't much like it). I don't know much about many of these musicians, so I'd love to hear what you think about them and anyone else I'm missing.

October 9, 2013 at 01:06 PM · I do not own any recordings and have only heard one or two. However, I do know that both Sammons and Menuhin played the Elgar concerto with Elgar conducting, so they would probably be most familiar with the kinds of things Elgar would be trying to do or want to bring out. So, I would start with one of those and see.

October 9, 2013 at 06:22 PM · Hi,

The Sammons recording of the Elgar Sonata is the one I know best in that list, and I have to say that it is simply amazing. There is a recording by Tasmin Little that I heard once which was very beautiful and is not on your list of post-1980 recordings.

Cheers!

October 9, 2013 at 10:13 PM · Thanks! I'll check out the Bean and Sammons. I've actually read some Elgar writings by Little but didn't think to check if she had recorded the sonata-- thanks for the rec.
