Infeld Red

June 9, 2013 at 03:55 PM · Hello,

I'm considering a set of infeld reds for my ~100 year old german violin.

Looking at shar's website, I noticed they only carry medium gauge. Are other gauges available elsewhere or is that all that is produced? Also, if thicker gauges are available what strings should I get thicker and which ones medium.

Lastly, what is a good E string to pair with the set? Usually I find the default string they send to be lacking. I tend to prefer the goldbrokat on this violin but I have lots of other E's sitting around.

Thank you for reading.

I have used them with a Pirastro Gold Label "stark" E as well as a Corelli Crystal E - all with good results. Might I suggest trying a Red G and D, Blue A, Corelli Crystal E?

June 9, 2013 at 07:57 PM · I've used Infeld Red A-D-G on one of my fiddles with the Goldbrokat medium E. The combo worked well on this instrument and brought out more power and ring than I'd gotten previously with wound-gut strings -- with a warm-dark sound in the lower notes and bright, clear tones in the upper register. Of course, how this setup would sound on your instrument and suit your personal taste remains to be heard. but it's worth a tryout.

Quinn offers custom sets, which can save you some expense. One of these is Red A-D-G plus the E of your choice. Not sure if Shar or SW strings has similar deals.

Since a lot of E's are quite inexpensive, you might also consider getting a pack of miscellaneous E's for the tryout.

As per Shar's review, Infeld Red it is located 1/2 way along the "Subtle-Direct" and 3/4 toward Textured on "Smooth-Textured" dimensions. (http://blog.sharmusic.com/blog/bid/87064/Choosing-the-Right-Set-of-Strings)

During Thomastik's experiential String tasting workshop, held in one of the biggest violin shops here in Toronto last year, different sets, from Dominant to PI and everything in between were installed on 8 workshop violins from the same maker.

"Infeld Red" had the best sound hands down.

As far as the string gauge is concerned, please use the search engine on this site. There are plenty discussion already.
