Hello! I recently purchased the Q3HD after seeing it highly recommended by many V.commers and other musicians. I am very happy with the sound quality. However, I cannot figure out how to transfer the complete video file (with audio) off the SD card in the Q3HD, and onto my computer. At this point I can transfer the video, but it is mute. The Zoom website offers no help that I can see. Do any of you with more experience of this machine know what I'm doing wrong? Surely it must be possible? Or does a person simply have to buy multiple SD cards, which then can't be read except via another Q3HD?
Thank you for any help.
So far I have not yet tried the usb connection.
I put the card in sc-to-usb abapter - a recent one if the sc card is "hc" and the .mov files copy o.k.
If you have sound on the Q3HD but not on the computer, it must be a question of configuration of the player software (codecs?)
At this point I can transfer the video, but it is mute.
Hi Lynae
No sound is caused by not having the right software to decode it.
According to the FAQ on the Zoom site you need to have the Quicktime player installed.

Q: Can movies taken with the Q3HD be played back with Windows Media Player?
A: No, Windows Media Player does not support the MOV file format that the Q3HD uses. To play MOV files, use the QuickTime player available free of charge from Apple Corporation.
Cheers
Robert
PS ... and here's the link to the player -> QuickTime Download
Thank you very much - I'll have a look at all those things. I do have Quick Time installed, so that isn't the problem, and the sound and video play fine either directly on the Q3HD or when linked in to the computer by USB cable and using the "HandyShare" software that came with the machine. But I cannot actually download from the machine to the computer and get more than a silent video - the sound files don't seem to be transferring and I wondered if they are stored separately somewhere.
Have any of you downloaded a video clip off the machine onto the computer and had it play properly? My hope was to use this for recording not only my own concerts, but lessons for students, in which case I would need to be able to transfer the files to the memory sticks they all bring to lessons.
Thanks again!
My daughter uses one of these all of the time (to record her lessons and to make audition recordings.) She uses a USB connection and has not had a problem. She's using a Macbook with Quicktime.
You can easily play every movie file (including Quicktime-Movies) with the VLC player (available) it at www.videolan.org...
I suggest you use this instead of installing software from Apple. Quicktime is a bloated piece of software that will put files into the startup folder etc., it is just unnecessary. With VLC you do not need to install any codecs as they are included with the program.
I've been using my Zoom Q3 for two years - it's great for musicians.
-Plug it in with the usb cable. The one built into the device is super-short - I got tired of propping it up on a shoe-box so I bought a usb extension cord.
-An "autoplay" window pops up - select "open folder to view files." You'll get the Q3_SD(Drive letter:) file showing with several confusing choices.
- Select: ZoomHandyShare.exe (Application). It has a logo with a movie-film image.
-The Zoom HandyShare program opens up. Menu on left allows you to switch between what's on your computer and what's on the device. You can do some simple editing (trim the front and back, basically) and copy the file to your computer. It takes a few minutes and you might think it has crashed, so be patient. You can choose to upload directly to the web without copying it to your computer but you'll have no back-up in that case.
Hope this helps!
The .MOV files in the Q3HD "contain" the compressed video plus two possible types of audio: uncompressed PCM (like "wave" or CD files) or compressed AAC (like an improved MP3). I always set the recorder to PCM, for a CD-like quality, but the Q3HD uses AAC by default. In your player (Qicktime or VLC) you may have to adjust the settings to read the AAC component of the .MOV files.
Both the PCM and AAC options in the Q3HD menu have further settings (bitrate etc.) and I don't know if this too can influence readability.

are you able to hear the audio when you use the playback on the actual machine? (not computer)
also, what kind of computer do you have and which software are you using to view/edit?
