Corigliano's Sonata for Violin and Piano? One of the century's great works, in my humble opinion.
I'll tell you, but I'd like a citation:
Ervin Schulhoff wrote 2 violins sonatas.
Don't bother writing about Schulhoff, though, because I already did my dissertation on him.
To be realistic about your choices, are you bringing your own pianist to an audition? Don't expect a staff accompanist to know, for instance, Bartok 2nd sonata.
The Schulhoff sonatas are pretty freaking awesome.. as is his sonata for solo violin, which unfortunately you can't use.
lutoslawski subito
V for violin
There are a lot of works by Catalan composers you could research, such as Jordi Cervelló - Divertimento n.1.
Unfortunately these works are rarely played outside of Catalunya.
There are numerous British works you could also research as well.
Viola is my second instrument and in the String Project I hope to join, I'll be working with my viola also. It was suggested I examine a similar list for viola, and this is what I've got so far, but my knowledge of the viola literature is far less:
Bartók, Béla: Slovak Peasant's Dance
Bloch, Ernest: Meditation and Processional
Bloch, Ernest: Suite Hebraique (Piano/Viola)
Britten, Benjamin: Reflection
Carter, Eliot: Elegy
Clarke, Rebecca: Passacaglia on an Old English Tune
Elgar, Edward: Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit
Enescu, Georges: Concert Piece
Hindemith, Paul: Der Schwanendreher
Hindemith, Paul: Sonata (1939)
Husa, Karel: Poème
Kreisler, Fritz: Praeludium und Allegro
Montsalvatge, Xavier: Pregaria a Santiago
Part, Arvo: Spiegel Im Spiegel
Prokofiev, Sergei: 8 Pieces from Romeo and Juliet
Rota, Nino: Intermezzo
Shostakovich, Dmitri: Sonata for Viola and Piano
Takemitsu, Toru: A Bird Came Down the Walk
Vaughan Williams, Ralph: Romance
Zyman, Samuel: Sonata for Viola and Piano
Thanks so much for your help. You basically have to know everything as a DMA student, and I don't.
Marie,
No, you don't have to know everything as a DMA student. In fact, your dissertation probably won't be read, so don't worry about content. The only thing that matters is your use of "that" vs "which" and that you follow the formatting instructions.
By the way, you need to add Hindemith to your list.
Scott
I performed the York Bowen C minor sonata while at uni. I believe he wrote two sonatas. Some critic described them as impressionistic - if he thought that, they must have been poorly performed! The one we played is more like Stanford, only a bit more post-Wagnerian.
Add Janacek sonata (1914)

Philip Glass Chaconne
Philip Glass Chaconne
Karol Szymanowski Nocturne and Tarantelle op.28 is a great composition to play. I was written in 1915's.
Schnittke: Suite in the Old Style
Like the Stravinsky Suite Italienne, it's too long (also about 15 minutes), but you could take individual pieces from the suite.
If, as I understand your post, you're looking for something for violin and piano, this work: "Corigliano, John: Red Violin Caprices (1999)", which is for violin solo, presumably doesn't fit the requirement.
Nielsen sonata no 2 (no 1 misses by 5 years)
Robert Simpson Sonata for violin and piano.
I think both of these should qualify
