Happy holidays all. After a 15 year hiatus, I've decided to break out the old chicken fiddle. I was wondering if anyone could share some insights about my viola. It was purchased for $4500 in 1991 after I testing several instruments recommended by my teacher. I've included some photos and the label states:
The Violin House of Weaver
Washington DC. 1991
There's no mention of the actual maker, although the original bridge has William Weaver stamped on one side and Aubert Mirecourt stamped on the other side. I was wondering if this viola was brought over from a different country 'white' and finished by Mr. Weaver, or if he actually crafted it himself. Thanks in advance for any information.
I was going to take a trip down to Maryland and check out Potters/Weavers. I hear they are housed in the same building. I didn't realize William Weaver was still there; I figured he'd be retired by now.
I think Bill's daughter runs the shop now? If so she's going to know whether your viola is one of theirs.
