Normally I have held my student recitals in a community room to help keep down the costs of renting out a facility. However, my "rooms" were unavailable this winter and I had to find another option.
I put the word out to my students families that we were looking for a facility in case they knew of something. A new family of mine jumped forward and volunteered their house for the recital. It's a beautiful, huge place on a lake and they said that they loved to host various events ie. art galleries, piano recitals, etc. and that they really wanted to do it, so I accepted.
My dilemma. Should I ask the families of my other students bring a hostess gift of sorts for the family, or some other thank you gift? Should I be providing a thank you gift of some kind? My mother taught me etiquette but she never covered this scenario. :-) Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Bev
I agree it would be appropriate to offer a gift; and I think it should originate from you rather than the students, because you are the mover and shaker. Or you could invite them to contribute to one (nicer) present which you would choose, and they could sign a card.
Thanks for your advice. I think that I will plan on giving the family a gift and giving my other students families a chance to contribute, as some of them have already asked about bringing something.

November 28, 2011 at 10:25 PM · Hi there,
I think it would be nice if you offered a gift to the host as you would in any dinner party. A simple gift of appreciation would be much appreciated since the host had to prepare the place and other stuff.
