Wedding Quartet Repertoire

May 13, 2011 at 07:22 PM ·

My quartet is starting to get booked for weddings and gigs. Individually, we have all played at weddings, but in other groups where another member had already put together the music.

Our issue- we don't know where to start when it comes to selecting arrangements for the traditional wedding pieces. (Wedding March, etc.)

Suggestions? There are a lot of wedding books and arrangements out there!

I'm doing a wedding coming up where they want mostly sacred, and using some Don Hart arrangement which are very nice, don't remember the original publisher, but Latham is doing reprints I think.

The Last Resort series is the way to go. It's not perfect (such as a few pieces that fold out to three pages, which is something you don't need on a windy wedding day), but overall you can find music for any occasion. There are something like 6 books. You can get "music for 4" or "music for 3" although most of the parts don't overlap, or are in different keys. I once voiced complaint about this tactic, but the publisher was unsympathetic. I did, however, buy both sets, and usually play from the trio set. Hours of wedding fun.

There are a few other classics, such as the 2-volume whose name I can't remember but that everyone has.

Virtual Sheet Music do a wedding quartet album

with some very good arrangements in it.

Also Mozart divertimenti, Eine Kleine, a large number of standard quartets. I've been a subscriber for years - wonderful value.

I’ve been doing string quartet wedding gigs for about 40 years.  Back then, there weren’t a lot of good commercially available arrangements, so I started doing my own.  Starting in 2001, I started marketing my own arrangements at http://members.sibeliusmusic.com/jjacklich   I now have more than 300 arrangements on-line.  Typical wedding stuff includes the following:

Air from the 3rd Orchestral Suite by Bach

Alleluja from “Exultate Jubilate” by Mozart

Ave Maria (Vioin Melody) by Schubert

Ave Maria (Viola Melody) by Schubert

Ave Maria (Cello Melody) by Schubert

Ave Maria on the 1st Prelude of Bach by Gounod

Ave Verum Corpus by Mozart

Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin by Wagner (Here comes the bride)

Canon in D by Pachelbel

Crown with Thy Benediction by Mendelssohn

Coronation March from “The Prophet” by Meyerbeer

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiting by Bach

Largo from “Xerxes” by Handel

March and Procession of Bacchus from “Sylvia” by Delibes

Ode to Joy by Beethoven

Panis Angelicus by Franck

Prelude from the Te Deum by Charpentier

Royal Fireworks Music, Overture by Handel

Royal Fireworks Music, Bouree by Handel

Royal Fireworks Music, LaPaix by Handel

Royal Fireworks Music, La Rejouissance by Handel

Royal Fireworks Music, Minuets I & II by Handel

Salur d’Amour by Elgar

Sheep May Safely Graze (Violin Chorale Melody) by Bach

Sheep May Safely Graze (Viola Chorale Melody) by Bach

Still wie die Nacht by Boehm

The Prince of Denmark’s March by Clarke

Trumpet Tune in D by Pucell (actually by Clarke)

I've managed a wedding quartet in the Albuquerque, NM area for about 6 years now. We started out with a basic set of music, and have been adding to it ever since. Often, brides request music we don't have, so we'll search for it first then if we can't find it, we might make our own arrangement. We have several of Joel's arrangements and they work nicely. Here's our current repertoire list.
