Julia Fischer speaks about Berg concerto, Second Viennese School and music education at school

May 6, 2011 at 04:37 PM ·

Quote from the interview which you will find here:

MT: Berg, as you know, is part of the Second Viennese School, but his violin concerto is in a little different category than some of his music.

JF: Yes, of course, and you know, I am not a big fan of the Second Viennese School. [Laughing] So the best thing about the Berg concerto is that it is not entirely of the Second Viennese School. In this piece he went back to a more conservative style of composition. I think there is no question that the Alban Berg concerto is the best violin concerto to come from the Second Viennese School; it is a fantastic concerto, because Berg knew when to follow the rules and when to deny them. [I think] this is a quality that every composer should have. If you go to the classical period, if Mozart would have only followed the rules, he would have never been such a great composer, but he knew when not to follow them. After saying this, I am very much looking forward to playing it in Cleveland.

"But all together, we are living in a time, and I am talking about German kids now, that they need to learn English as quickly as possible and then learn how to use the computer as quickly as possible, so they can go out there and work for the industry as quickly as possible."

I respectfully disagree. We need to learn English aqap, and then learn how to use a computer aqap, and learn to play the violin(!) so we may become members of Violinist.com. Maybe things are different in Germany.
