Hi there, everyone! I've just come into a very Spanish-y mood after planning a graduation trip in Spain... and I was wondering something. Are there any pieces for violin that have a Spanish flair to them? Personally, I think that e.g. Lalo's Symphonie Espagnol is too... well, classical :D Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that tangoes, rumbas and boleros are all somewhat Spanish?
Thanks for any help!
Sarasate's Spanish Dances.
Sarasate Malaguena!
Manuel de Falla, Suite Populaire Espagnole. These are six wonderful pieces for violin and piano.

Turina is a great, and perhaps neglected Spanish composer. I recorded all his works for violin and piano on 2 CDs...well worth investigating.

There´re really lots of spanish music for solo violin, but I think you really wants or are interested on music made by spanish composers with spanish "sound"; so, you will find that kind of music in Sarasate pieces, of course, Manuel de Falla (violin transcriptions), Turina, Granados, etc... all them well known.
Please try Eduard Toldrá (1895 - 1962) too, a really interesting violinist and composer: his Six sonets are beautiful pieces he recorded and you can find quite easily.
Other interesting spanish violinsts/composers or just composers with nice works for violin: Manuel Quiroga (Ysayë´s 6th Solo violin sonate is a tribute to Quiroga), Xavier Montsalvatge, Robert Gerhard, Jesús de Monasterio, Xavier Turull, José del Hierro, Joaquín Nin, Enrique Fernández Arbós, Isaac Albéniz, Ramón Barce...
Best wishes.
Joan Manen worte a beautiful "concierto español" for violin and orch. (The one that Sarasate should have composed).. Mark Kaplan had a very good recording.
I've had fun with the free sheet music/transcriptions posted by this, Minneapolis based, Tango band:

Most of the arrangements have prominent violin parts. Maybe this will suit your mood.

Tarrega's ... oh, what is it ... the tremolo one. Rats. Recuerdos de la Alhambra. You can find it on IMSLP with a violin transcription (it's normally on guitar).
