Telemann Fantasias

December 2, 2010 at 01:49 AM ·

I'm looking for recommendations for a good scholarly performing edition of the Telemann Fantasias for solo violin.  Wondering if there might be one around with a facsimile of the original manuscript included...?

Any suggestions from fellow baroque violin music addicts will be much welcomed.

Thanks!

Baerenreiter publishes what they call an "Urtext" edition, which is widely available.  Their catalogue number is BA2972.

This is a link to their catalogue:

I haven't come across any, let me know if you find any that are completely unedited.  I use this version which suits me fine.

Here is link to what I suspect is a free version of the urtext:  http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/telemann/twv40_2-13/TelemannWV40.2-13.pdf . Here is a link to the manuscript for free: http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/telemann/twv40_2-13/TelemannWV40.02-13_Manuscript.pdf

Icking archive is a very good, free source for these sorts of baroque pieces.

Tom-

strange,  but there are 2 listings for the Telemann Fantasias at the Icking site, one says '12' and the other says 'XII'. The link you posted is from the '12'  and the music does not match... I think those may be the ones that are more commonly done on flute. It's the 'XII' version that I'm familiar with as the 12 Fanatasias... there are only 5 included here, but there are transcriptions for viola as well:

ps- I hunted these down at my university when I first heard them years ago but I recently bought the Barenreiter

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've had a look at the manuscript source at the set of 12 fantasias http://icking-music-archive.org/scores/telemann/twv40_2-13/TelemannWV40.02-13_Manuscript.pdf.  In these fantasias there are no notes below D.  This suggests to me that this set was originally written for the flute in D, and not the violin, as the title page says.

This might be a better link than the first for the edition listed in the earlier post.
