Where is the best site to download classical music midi files for violin, violin/piano, etc... ?
I'm a member of http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com for few years, and they have accompaniment files in normal and slower speed (which is useless because it's all straight time so you have to play like you're playing with metronome). But good thing is that they have midi files for every scores they have. You can use some simple midi editing software to edit the tempo here and there and making it more lively.
I was really only thinking of using a midi file as a metronome, and for practice. Once the tune is up and ready, then you have to get a live piano player/orchestra or whatever.
I just downloaded accompaniment tracks for Glazunov concerto from Virtual Sheetmusic.
Unfortunately there are many, many errors in tempo on the accompaniment tracks. Sometimes sections are far too slow and sometimes too fast. Also, there are errors in the click track. For instance in the last movement there is a long section in which the metronome is going in 3/4 but the tempo is 6/8.This has some limited use, but I don't think it is by any means of a high enough quality. They must not have run this by a violinist for review.
Are there any other sources of semi-decent accompaniment tracks?
You may find this site useful:
You may need to change the file extensions from String Quartets (.squ) or Keyboard Plus (.kpp) to .mid so your Operating System can associate/open them with the correct app/software.
Cheers,
Robert
PS they play well in MuseScore particularly if you use better quality soundfonts.
I don't tend to have problems finding midi files I need. I also slow down mp3s wit Audacity. The quality isn't good but OK for my purposes.
There is an app: "the Amazing Slow Downer" that slows down the music without distorting the sound too significantly.

Thanks Don, If you use a mac, you can download program called “midi swing” at http://www.les-stooges.org/pascal/midiswing/ MidiSwing is a "midi sequencer". It will divide all the tracks in a midi file. Say you have a violin/piano midi file. In midi-swing, you can take out the violin track and save it. The piano track will be left. You can simply play the new midi file, and now you have piano comp for your violin solo. I know this is old stuff, but I thought I would mention it.
