Complete recordings of etude books?

May 27, 2010 at 07:30 PM ·

Lately I've been on kind of a Gavinies bender.  I really love this book and I wish I could find a recording.  It seems that most people are not interested in listening to violin etudes unless it's Paganini or selected Ernst and Wieniawski etudes.  However, I've always felt that the etudes of Gavinies and also many etudes by Kreutzer, Fiorillo and Dont are very well-made and enjoyable pieces of music as well.  I think that as a student I'd benefit greatly from being able to listen to these etudes and being able to enjoy hearing them played musically would be very helpful.  So far all I've been able to find is Szenthelyi's The Art of the Caprice, but that doesn't seem to be complete.  Maybe I'm crazy but I'd like to listen to ALL of Gavinies, in order.

The Kreutzer etudes have been recorded by Jacques Israelievich, of www.stringology.com.

Edit: and there is a recording of all the Rode Caprices by Axel Strauss, which I like a lot. Some of them are on YouTube.

I don't know if there's a complete recording of the Gavinies etudes, but it would be great to hear them played in order.

You can hear the Israelievitch recording of the Kreutzer 42 etudes here on YouTube. I found them there earlier this year.

Check out also Alexei Bruni's YouTube performance of Fiorillo 28.  I don't care for all of Alexei's tempo changes, but that's another discussion.  Would be nice to hear a pro play through all of the Fiorillo etudes, but I haven't found such a recording yet.

Greetings,

if you can get them then:

1) Staryk-  a cd of many differnet etudes including Fiorillo and er,  sevcik.  One of the most fascinating and brilliant disks ever made.  Forgot the name but someone will know!!!!

2)  Shumsky- the Rode Caprices.

Cheers,

Buri

Wow thank you so much!  I am enjoying the Kreutzer and I'll get the others also.  I'll just keep searching for a complete Gavinies and if it hasn't been done then at some point I'll do my best to record them, not that my playing compares to the people that were mentioned, but if I'm the only one who ever makes a recording of Gavinies that's better than nothing I guess.  Cheers and thanks again.

Kreutzer

Cihat Askin has recorded all the Kreutzer etudes. (see under "KREUTZER ETUDES ON CD")

Wohlfahrt  - I don't know of anyone who has recorded all sixty.

Ji Young Um has recorded the first thirty (not sixty) Wohlfahrt etudes.

Professor Todd Ehle (ProfessorV on YouTube) has also recorded the first thirty Wohlfahrt etudes. Not sure where one can obtain the CD now. I do not see it on the website of Southwest Strings.

Clayton Haslop (of violinmastery.com) has recorded the Kreutzer etudes along with the corresponding instructional DVDs which are extremely helpful. He breaks every etude down and demonstrates the measures in a "practice slowly" format.

I would highly recommend the Kreutzer recording (book+2 cds) by Israelievitch mentioned above but for those that already own the book, the recording of the 42 studies are available on youtube here :

August 17, 2010 at 01:13 PM · Can anyone recommend an edition of Gavinies? I was staggered to find about 9 listed on one website.

I'm using the Galamian edition.  I think it's very nice.

I see that you referenced The Art of the Caprice. Sorry for the repeat
