My standard recommendations are red label (nice and cheap) for students who don't need anything picky yet, and Dominants for a step up. I've been seeing these Overture strings around; they're a nice student price--any commnets from any of you who've tried them?
Cheap is a relative word..... I have not tried Overture, however I have tried a handful of internet specials from ebay, and most of them lasted less than a week; either they started out bad, or got there quickly. Even with the significant savings per string set, I ended up wasting the cost of a good set of strings.
If you are interested in trying some strings for evaluation, you may try one of a number of different types, rather than trying sets. That would be a cheaper way to narrow the field. Maybe change out your D string every week with a different candidate?

I've had a few students in 4th/5th grade try them out...they do sound a bit better than the Red Label.
However, I've found that putting a *good* set of strings on many of their instruments improves things dramatically, and it doesn't have to break the bank. I usually go with the Thomastik Vision fractional sized sets; their cost isn't excessive (a 3/4 set is $30, 1/2 and smaller is only $20). I'm impressed that Thomastik offers these sets at prices better than their Dominant lineup.
