Hello! I'm currently in the market for a violin, and was wondering if anyone knows anything about violins made by Asa White. I know he was an American violin maker in the 1800s, but would like to know about the general reputation, sound quality, and price range of his instruments. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
A. W. White was a prolific Boston maker from the late 1800's, and is well regarded. Some of his early ones were German violins that he varnished. As they only recently broke the $10 k barrier, I myself would be reluctant to get involved with one at $20 K, though older American violins of quality have been getting the respect they deserve lately.
I tried one a few months ago and did not care for it at all. At that price, I think you are better off with a contemporary (e.g. living) maker.

Upon some googling, it seems that they're now selling typically in 5 figures, ranging from $10k~$20k+.
