Recommended Recording of Mozart #3 w/Franko Cadenza

June 24, 2009 at 10:09 PM ·

 Hello,

I have a student working on Mozart Violin Concerto #3 and she will be doing the Franko cadenza. The recording I have has a different cadenza and iTunes (un)helpfully doesn't always list which cadenza is in the recording! (Because of the length of the preview in iTunes, it also doesn't give any sample of the solo violinist in the 1st movement, but that's another issue...)

Do you know who has recorded the concerto with Franko's cadenza for the 1st movement, and if you have one to recommend, is it available through iTunes or another paid, legal online service? I'm going out of town for a month and would like to steer her toward something to download before I leave!

Thanks in advance for your help.

Greetings,

don`t know if he uses the Franko,  probably not.  But of al the great recordings of Mozart I find Grumiaux gives the most perfect version for my ear.   It would be a shame to stick to one recording on the basis of what the cadenza is.

Menuhin is somewhat heavy handed but may be using the Franko Cadenzas.

Cheers,

Buri

I believe Ann Sophie Muetter's (or however you spell it) Mozart Concertos have the Franko cadenzas; at least that is what I recall my son's former teacher had him listen to.

Buri--I agree that Grumiaux is wonderful! I've got a couple of versions of Mozart 3 in my library and *used* to have one with the Franko cadenza. Probably lent it to a student and lost it forever...this happens a lot!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, both here and in emails. I've sent the info along to my student and she can decide what her ear and budget will allow.

I just got the James Ehnes recording and it is WONDERFUL.  He uses his own cadenzas.  That's another thought, if you want to go there ;-P

Menuhin uses it in his recording.

Just audio- in that case, I recommend getting it from ITunes for superior sound quality. Or if you want even better sound quality, and lp. :)

And a video of Stern, same cadenza, conducting here:

Szeryng uses the Cadenza by Franko as do A.S.Mutter +Menuhin(The cadenzas are written for Menuhin)Grumiaux plays  the dacenzas by Ysaye(abridged version). Kogan plays Franko in one and D.Oistrach in onother version.

For my taste Szeryngs playing is superb
