Who is worth studying with in Australia?

February 27, 2009 at 04:56 PM ·

Hello everybody! I am currently a grad student at Jacobs School and I am thinking of applying for some sort of graduate diploma in Australia. Does anyone know who are the best teachers in Australia worth studying with? Exept advancing as a violinist, it is also important for me so that the teacher has lots of connections in Australia and is well respected as I plan on living there and so far have no idea about their musical circles. Any thoughts, please?!

Thanks, Ana

Forgive me; perhaps you didn't intend it, but your post comes over as somewhat arrogant. You are thinking of going to Australia and you are enquiring whether anyone there is worthy enough to teach you more? If I was an Aussie that would be me right off you from the start. Secondly, you allude to finding someone who, from your description, is not just a teacher but also can act as your personal "agent" by opening his or her circle to you. I expect there are Australian gifted players and teachers who are wondering whether you are "worth" taking on board as a student.

Do you think you might be expecting something a little in excess of that which you are entitled to?

I'm not hearing, "If you are worthy, you may be my agent."  She's a grad student at Jacobs; what are the comparable Australian conservatories?  That would be a start.

When I lived in Oxford all the Aussies and Kiwis came over to study with Kato Havas there.

Thanks for all your comments. I just wanted to clarify that I am not a native speaker and did not mean to offend anybody.

Where would you be staying in Australia?

Sydney and Melbourne are the most music oriented.
