Edwin Clement

November 24, 2008 at 02:20 AM ·

I just read about Monsieur Clement's work on one of the forums here and would like to know more about him and his works... Can someone please share how to get in contact with him and the price range of his violin bows?

Hi Allen, If you've read the same forum threads about bows that I have, the person that kept on mentioning this fine French bow maker (archetier) also claims to represent his bows to the US market. I'd suggest you try to contact him to try a Clement bow.

Unfortunately I live in the UK, so it's probably better for me to get in contact with M. Clemen directly : )

Hi Allen, Since you are in the UK, you might try getting in touch with Sean Bishop. He stocks many bows--by contempory and historic makers, so he might have some bows by Clement. I've seen him post here on V.com before, so you send him a message through his profile, or through his web site is listed below.

Thanks for your suggestion Josh. I checked Mr. Bishop's website and he does not have Clement's bows in stock at the moment.

Doesn't anyone have the contact details for Edwin Clement...?

His contact details come up readily under google if you use the word "archetier" (bow maker). If you want to verify that a French address is current, you can try using www.pagesjaunes.fr

Thanks Josh!

I know Edwin very well.....right from his early days working in London with French bowmaker Didier Caludel!! Unfortunately I have none of his bows at the moment. What I do have is a truly great violin bow by Noel Burke.....made only a few weeks ago. Anyone remember this maker? 6 VSA Gold medals, Paris 1999 Gold, Manchester Cello bow making comp....Gold.

cheers

Try the Burke.

I've always maintained Gary Leahy is a great maker, trained by Noel Burke.

I've tried some of Gary's bows up against a few french bows and some High end Hill bows and Gary's bows came out on top.

Hi Sean,

Any idea who Noel trained with?

From the Bishop Strings website:

Noel Burke

Noel Burke studied bowmaking under Charles Espey (USA) and Stephane Tomachot (France) After working in Paris and Cremona (Italy) he set up his workshop in Ireland in 1998.

As one of the finest makers in the world Noel has won nearly every major bow making competition including:

1994 - Violin Society of America (VSA) Gold medals for violin, viola and cello bows

1996 - A repeat of above!

1998 - RNCM Strad cello and bow making competition. 1st Prize

1999 - Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris

Noel started studying with Charles Espey in Seattle and went on to spend many years with Stephane Tomochot in Paris. Can't do much better than that.

He actually started making woodwinds at the Newark school, in his teens, I think. Besides being incredibly talented, he is a fun, witty, and charming fellow  to be around and that hasn't hurt his career either.

I visited the last VSA competition in Portland (2008), and was very impressed with bows by the winners Yannick Le Canu and Robert Morrow (who lives in my area WA).

I think bows are very personal. I have friends who prefer old bows, and don't realize that there are plenty of contemporary bows that are wonderful.

A  friend of mine in the Seattle Symphony finally received his  Sylvain Bigot  gold/ebony mounted Maline copy. It is really a stunning bow that plays like a dream. I am waiting for mine.

In the US, S. Bigot's representative is in Seattle, WA.

Thanks for the update Carol, I believe Gennady is the one representing Bigot in the US.

btw, just saw a beautiful viola bow by S. Bigot on ebay,  a Tourte copy.

I would love to have a violin bow like that. I wish I was a violist.
