Having difficulty selling a rare bow!

August 25, 2008 at 06:33 PM · I have a rare, adjustable (now discontinued) BenoĆ®t Rolland "solo" Spiccato bow ($1000+) and am having difficulties finding a way to get rid of it as I have since upgraded my bow. I went to Studio City Music in attempt put the bow on consignment, but due to their vast array of bows they didn't believe they could sell the bow in a feasible fashion. If I cannot put the bow on consignment, how can I possibly sell it on my own and get appropriate value?

August 25, 2008 at 07:42 PM · There are some other fine violin shops in the LA area....Cauer, Weishaar, etc. Are any of those shops interested? If not, you could try some smaller shops in LA or OC with a lower inventory that may have a market for it.

August 25, 2008 at 07:43 PM · I'm sorry I have a correction; the bow is actually the "Maestro" and goes for $2000+.

August 25, 2008 at 07:41 PM · Brian,

Ha! You have discovered the great dark side of the violin, which is so much like boats, horses, and fine jewelry: easy to buy and difficult to sell.

My advice, as someone who has sold a difficult non-pedigreed violin, is that you have to find the right seller. I asked many dealers to sell aforementioned violin, but finally found someone willing, and it finally sold. It's entirely possible that some dealers don't have something like this in stock and have a market for it.

Just call them.

I will give Weisshar and Cauer a call. Do you know any good smaller shops?

August 25, 2008 at 07:50 PM · Scott,

Thanks for the heads up. I had no problem selling my old (only $1800) violin, but selling my bow has been much more difficult as they're a dime a dozen. Hopefully I can find a market for it somewhere.

August 25, 2008 at 08:10 PM · I'm not recommending anyone in particular.

And...you may get a more comprehensive list by simply doing a google search but here are some shops I know of in addition to Cauer and Studio City:

World of Strings - Long Beach

Old Town Music - Pasadena

Foster's - Orange

Cremona - LA

Weisshaar - LA and Costa Mesa

Everjoy - Irvine

Morey's - Lakewood

Metzler - Glendale

I've had good luck with Peter Prier in SLC.

August 26, 2008 at 12:55 PM · Another option is to spread the word amongst all the violin teachers/students you know, maybe put up a flyer or two on student messageboards at local music schools.

August 26, 2008 at 04:30 PM · I picked up an adjustable Spiccato from a local shop for $550. Indications were that they were a hard sell.

August 26, 2008 at 05:23 PM · You could try selling the bow at auction. Tarisio will be holding an auction in NY the 4th week of October. Skinner's auction is October 12th, and Christie's Fall auction is October 12th in NY.
