Audio Technica ATM350 Cardioid Condenser Clip-On Microphone?

August 4, 2008 at 03:06 AM · Has anyone tried the Audio Technica ATM350 Cardioid Condenser Clip-On Microphone? I am looking for a mic that is easy to put on/remove from my violin for concerts with a band. I haven't had much experience playing amplified so I'm not sure what to look for. My violin is a nice one (so I don't want to put anything on it that can't be removed) and I'd like for it to sound as natural as possible. Also, can playing amplified at high volumes do any damage to the instrument?

Thanks,

Hollis

Good luck!

In case you don't already do it, tie your cable around your belt so when the cable gets stepped on or snagged it doesn't break your violin.

Anyone have experience using the ATM350? Suggested preamps?

This seems to be a stale thread, but an interesting topic. There are many good, small, clip-on microphones out there, and one sounds about as bad as another. My personal feelings about amplified violins aside, I can tell you from my recording experience that no microphone, no matter how exquisitely made, can accurately reproduce the violin. There is so much lost that in my view the quality of any close-miked violin doesn't really matter. If you have a fine violin, don't take it out on band gigs and clip hardware to it. Buy a cheap beater for this kind of use.
