I have violin question.
I read about Paolo de Barbieri has line that pass over corner block after he joined Candi's workshop. But what about his earlier work? Is it same or has differt lining?
If there is any body knows about this, please let me know.
Thank you.
Well, Paolo de Barbieri was a Candi's pupil, so I presume he allways used the continuous linings over the corner blocks. Since Candi's influence was stronger in the beggining of his career, I presume this system also on his earlier instruments. As a matter of fact he always did so, I think, because we can find this feature in a violin dated 1959.
But, as usual, attribution can't be made base in an isolated feature.

I got barbieri violin 1921. And it looks like it doesn't have continuous lining. So then it means it is not from him?
There are many many fake Modern Italians on the market now, probably they are being made in China. Some of them have fake certificates, similar labels and brands. I saw a clever Oddone fake some weeks ago.
Do you have documents? By whom? Do you have pics?
De Barbieri used the external mould and spruce linings which pass over the corner blocks. He also branded his instruments under the tailpin and inside over the top block, he also numbered his instruments inside on the left rib near the upper block. Perhaps you could show you instrument to an specialist in modern Italians.

I got the vintage looking violin from ebay. It seems like around 80 years old. It got lot of wear and tear. And it sound quite nice. some sweet sound like. It seems not quite chinese I think. But who knows. I got pictures of the violin but I don't know how to put up the picture.
Hi! If you got it on e.bay most centainly it's fake, and most certainly also it's Chinese, and perhaps you may have paid more than its real value, unfortunatly.
Why would a violin by Paolo De Barbieri, which can be sold for 40 or 50K, would be sold on ebay?
Modern Italians are the new target of fakers, beware!!!

Is this the violin you cleaned with alcohol?
I have a 1936 De Barbieri and it has the continuous linings, also his brand under the tailpin and on the bridge, signature on the label, and his serial number written internally on the upper rib. It also has his own decorative pegs, which I think was a speciality of the Candi school. It's modelled on Paganini's Cannon Guarneri.
